From its long coastline and walking and cycling routes to historic sites in Esperance, the Shire of Esperance offers a range of options for planning your trip. First, consider whether you want to focus mainly on coastal scenery, a particular route or cultural sites.

Coast and Routes

The Shire of Esperance covers 44,000 square kilometres of farmland, reserves and five national parks. Its coastline stretches for more than 400 kilometres, from the Recherche Archipelago to the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. This scale shapes the wider regional setting; individual outings each have their own focus.

In Esperance, the Great Ocean Drive is a 40-kilometre coastal loop drive. Along the way, beaches, headlands, small bays, steep cliffs and hidden seawater pools shape the route. The Great Ocean Drive cycle and walking path runs from the Esplanade along the coast to Twilight Cove, passes through bushland to Pink Lake and returns to town along Pink Lake Road. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Frenchman Peak Trail is a three-kilometre bush walk up the eastern slope to the summit. The route offers views across Cape Le Grand National Park, the south coast and the islands of the Recherche Archipelago. At Dempster Head, the Rotary Walk Trail has two loop options: one is 0.75 kilometres long and the other is 1.3 kilometres. This lets you choose between loops of different lengths and a route with a summit destination.

Esperance also offers experiences on bush, beach and wetland trails. Activities include boating on the ocean, skiing on lakes and fishing. Check conditions before taking part in water activities.

Culture and History in Esperance

Museum Park is a historic precinct on Dempster Street and includes Market Village, the Sound Shell and the Goods Shed. Market Village comprises historic buildings that were relocated here to preserve Esperance’s heritage. Today, they house local makers, creative studios, small businesses and visitor experiences.

Among the Nyungar, Esperance is known as Kepa Kurl; the name means “where the water lies like a boomerang”. Frenchman Peak has the Aboriginal name Mandooboornup and is significant to local Aboriginal culture. Both names provide a cultural connection to Esperance and to a prominent peak in the region.

The Esperance Museum gives locals and visitors insight into the history of Esperance and the development of the region. Check opening hours before visiting. Near the destination is Esperance Stonehenge, a full-scale replica of the original Stonehenge in the United Kingdom.

The Cannery Arts Centre offers exhibitions and workshops for the Esperance region and its visitors. Before visiting, check whether the current gallery program suits your plans.

Staying and Finding Your Way Around

The Shire of Esperance manages three bush campsites in the Shire’s coastal reserves. If camping suits your travel plans, check current site conditions before you arrive.

The Esperance Visitor Centre is located in the historic Museum Village and serves as a point of contact for tourism enquiries. Transwa bus and train tickets, as well as national park entry passes, are sold there. As these services may change, check the latest information before your trip.
