The City of Rockingham combines coastal recreation, distinctive natural landscapes, and local art and history. Highlights include Rockingham Beach, Lake Richmond and several cultural attractions. Each offers a different focus for planning your visit: at the beach, you can enjoy swimming, water sports and possible events; at the lake, the focus is on a thrombolite community and a walking trail. The museum, Arts Centre and Naval Memorial Park add district history, arts programmes and remembrance to the mix. You can tailor your stay to the theme that interests you most.
Rockingham Beach and Foreshore
Rockingham Beach can be viewed from the Rockingham Foreshore. The Rockingham Beach Foreshore includes an accessible “Lookout” and a “Beach Bowl”. Rockingham Beach offers opportunities for water sports and other water-based recreation. The beach also offers coastal scenery, encounters with marine animals and adventure experiences.
Beach Plaza is a flexible venue in the heart of Rockingham and can accommodate up to 700 people. It can host a year-round programme of events, such as arts and crafts markets, farmers’ markets, concerts, films, carols and street performances. If a particular market or concert is the deciding factor for your visit, check the event dates in advance.
Nature around Lake Richmond
Lake Richmond is a freshwater lake within a 77.86-hectare bushland area. A boardwalk offers views of an endangered thrombolite community that extends across three hectares. The Anne Mueller Environmental Walk is an easy, three-kilometre loop around the lake and is rich in birdlife.
The nature experiences offer different focuses: the boardwalk directs your attention to the thrombolite community, while the walk highlights the loop trail and birdlife. If you are interested in a walking route, the trail has clear information on its length, route and difficulty. The boardwalk, by contrast, draws attention to a particular community of life at the lake.
Art, district history and remembrance
Rockingham Arts Centre offers professionally curated exhibitions, workshops and development programmes led by industry professionals. The centre also presents a year-round programme of exhibitions and events. If a particular date is important to your plans, check the event dates in advance.
Rockingham Museum preserves and shares the history of the district through exhibitions, artefacts and community collections. Its building was originally the Rockingham Roads Board office, built in 1946, which served as the district’s civic centre; its original Art Deco style has been preserved. The museum brings together both the history of the district and the architectural history of a former public centre.
Naval Memorial Park is home to a memorial walk for the men and women of the naval service who served their country. The park is also home to the conning tower of the submarine HMAS Orion. The memorial walk and the tower offer a different historical focus from the museum: here, the emphasis is on naval service and remembrance.
