Meekatharra combines tangible local history with walking trails and destinations beyond the town. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you’re interested in keepsakes and old buildings, prefer to explore along the creek, or want to discover the plants and rock formations in the surrounding area. Options range from an easy walk around Meekatharra Creek to a long 4WD route between Carnarvon and Meekatharra.

Local history at the museum and among old buildings

The Meekatharra Museum is located in the Shire of Meekatharra building on Main Street, inside the library. Its collection includes more than 100 photographs and keepsakes from life in Meekatharra. The museum also has locally made quilts. Photographs, personal keepsakes and textiles offer different ways to explore local history.

The Meeka Heritage Walk Trail offers insights into Meekatharra’s old buildings. Its focus is on the buildings, while the museum brings together photographs and collection pieces. If you’d like to get to know the town through its history, you can use these different themes to guide your choice.

Walking trails and a drive around town

The Meeka Creek Trail is an easy, 3-kilometre walking trail around Meekatharra Creek. Along the trail, 17 information boards tell stories about Meekatharra. This combines a walk by the creek with information about local history. The Meekatharra Drive Trail, by contrast, focuses on a drive through and around Meekatharra, with information boards explaining the significance of each place.

The Meekatharra Drive Trail takes approximately two hours, and a 4WD vehicle is not required. The two trails offer different planning cues: the Creek Trail has a stated distance, while the Drive Trail has an approximate duration and information about the vehicle required. You can think of the walk and the drive as different experiences, rather than planning them as similar routes.

Destinations beyond Meekatharra

There are also destinations nearby with different points of interest. Peace Gorge is 3 kilometres outside Meekatharra on the Landor-Meekatharra Road. The site is used for picnics and self-contained camping, and is known for its granite rock formations. Mount Yagahong is 40 kilometres southeast of Meekatharra along the Meekatharra-Sandstone Road. It provides habitat for more than 70 species of native plants, including the bush tucker plants Wild Pear and Cogla.

Barlangi Rock is 75 kilometres along the Meekatharra-Sandstone Road and lies at the centre of one of Australia’s 27 confirmed meteorite craters. The three destinations differ in both distance and subject: granite formations and picnicking at Peace Gorge, native plants at Mount Yagahong, and a meteorite crater at Barlangi Rock. This can help you choose your own priorities for a stay without turning the places into a fixed touring itinerary.

Getting there, an event and a long-distance route

Meekatharra is on the Great Northern Highway. Transwa coaches stop on Main Street in the heart of Meekatharra. If you plan to arrive by coach, check the current timetable before you travel, as transport information can change. Main Street is also a specific landmark to help you find your way on arrival.

The Spirit of Meekatharra is an annual celebration for locals and visitors; the event was formerly known as the Meekatharra Outback Festival. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates before making arrangements.

The Kingsford Smith Mail Run is on a completely different scale: this 834-kilometre 4WD route runs from Carnarvon on the west coast to Meekatharra, mostly on gravel roads. It is markedly different from the trails in town. For planning purposes, it makes sense to think of local discoveries and a long-distance route like this as separate trips.

The local history, walking and driving routes, and landscape destinations each offer clearly distinct points of interest.
