Margaret River combines easy riverside loop trails, a longer family-friendly track, mountain bike trails and cultural offerings. The Margaret River is also an important cultural point of reference for the Wadandi and influences the sandbars at Rivermouth Beach. The following trail profiles and cultural offerings show how these options differ.
Trails by Distance and Character
North of Margaret River town centre lies the Pines Mountain Bike Network, with more than 16 kilometres of mountain bike trails. This offers a distinct type of route alongside the walking trails and loop trails in and around the town.
Two easy loop trails differ in both length and route. The Chimney Trail in Wooditjup National Park is 3.2 kilometres long and passes the former site of Wharncliffe Mill. The Rotary South Bank River Trail is also an easy loop; it covers 2.4 kilometres along the northern and southern banks of the Margaret River. At 0.8 kilometres shorter, it is the shorter of the two loops. When weighing up the routes, you can therefore consider not only their length but also their respective points of interest: the former mill site or the two riverbanks.
The family-friendly Wadandi Track stretches for 25 kilometres from Cowaramup through Margaret River to Witchcliffe. This is a different scale of route from the short loops. The Ten Mile Brook Trail, meanwhile, leads to Ten Mile Brook Dam on foot or by bicycle; the dam is the named destination of this route.
The Margaret River Visitor Centres stock Jane Scott and Ray Forma’s guidebook for the Cape to Cape Track, as well as official topographic map packs for the track. Stock and local service arrangements may change. If you are planning a purchase, it is best to check availability in advance.
River Mouth and Beach Landscape
At the Margaret River Mouth, a section of the Cape to Cape Track takes day hikers over soft sand to a river crossing. Local conditions may vary, so take the terrain into account when planning this section. Children also paddle in the river at the Margaret River Mouth on boogie boards.
At Rivermouth Beach, seasonal fluctuations in the Margaret River shape the surrounding sandbars. The river is therefore not only part of the beach landscape there, but also influences its shape through seasonal changes.
Wadandi Culture, Art and Produce
Margaret River is culturally connected to the Wadandi. For tens of thousands of years, the Margaret River has been an important source of life for the Wadandi. This cultural connection adds a distinct way of experiencing the place to its trails and landscapes.
Arts Margaret River is a not-for-profit cultural community organisation and has been the main umbrella organisation for the arts in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River for more than five decades. Its programme includes music, theatre and dance performances, visual art exhibitions and workshops. Events are held at Nala Bardip Mia – Margaret River HEART and other venues across the Shire. Individual programmes may change; if you are interested in a particular event, check the latest dates.
The Margaret River Farmers’ Market sells seasonal fresh produce and artisan foods directly from farmers and producers. Alongside trails and culture, this offers a way to focus your visit on food sold directly by its producers.
