Carnamah’s technological history is brought to life on a monumental scale: The Big Tractor stands on Yarra Street and is a five-times-enlarged replica of the Chamberlain 40K, the first tractor manufactured in Western Australia in 1949. At 11.5 metres high and 16 metres long, it is a distinctive focal point for anyone interested in agricultural technology and local history.

Technology and Local History

The Carnamah Historical Society & Museum at 10 Macpherson Street offers a different perspective on Carnamah’s past. Its collection includes objects, photographs and documents from Carnamah’s social, domestic, commercial and agricultural past. The topics range from everyday life to work and agriculture.

Carnamah Heritage Park lies in the heart of town. Stainless-steel plaques featuring family histories can be installed on its 18 steel plinths. The Carnamah War Memorial commemorates the past in a different way: its plaque names people from Carnamah who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial was funded and built in 1931 through public donations. Family histories and public remembrance thus stand side by side in the town.

Art Trail and Activity

The Art and Heritage Trail features historic plaques, murals, historic photographs, historic advertisements and artworks. It begins at a mural outside IGA at 6 Yarra Street and ends with a final plaque outside 46 Macpherson Street. Along the named stops, its themes bring together different forms of local history and art.

The Carnamah Walk Trail has a different focus: it is one kilometre long, with winding paths designed for walking or cycling. The two offerings can therefore be distinguished by their stated themes: the Walk Trail focuses on the path and activity, while the Art and Heritage Trail showcases historical and artistic themes.

Nature in Town and the Region

The wildflower display in Carnamah showcases more than 600 varieties of unique Western Australian wildflowers. Nearby, the Yarra Yarra Lakes offer a different perspective on the landscape: they are remnants of an ancient river system that created a series of shimmering salt lakes.

The two nearby destinations west and east of town also have different points of interest. About one kilometre west of Carnamah, the Yarra Yarra Lakes Lookout is reached via a short gravel access road off the Carnamah–Eneabba Road. There is ample room there for large vehicles or caravans to turn around. One kilometre east of Carnamah, on Bunjil-Carnamah Road, is the 150-year-old Macpherson Homestead. It is a spot for casual stargazing; toilets are available, and the verandah offers shelter if needed.

For nature viewing further afield, the Carnamah–Eneabba Road passes through Tathra National Park east of Eneabba. There are marked trails where you can observe flora and fauna. This destination extends the places of interest in town and nearby into a trip to the wider region.
