Tallarook lies at the foot of the Tallarook Ranges. The Great Victorian Rail Trail starts here; there is also the Tallarook State Forest, an arboretum on Dabyminga Creek, and various destinations for picnics, recreation and local history. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on getting active on the trail, spending time in the forest or visiting places in the town.

Great Victorian Rail Trail and forest

The Great Victorian Rail Trail is a multi-use trail that starts in Tallarook. You can explore it on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. This makes the mode of transport a practical choice for an outing: a walk, bike ride and horse ride each offer a different focus.

Tallarook State Forest covers 5,100 hectares and offers opportunities for horse riding, camping and hiking. Together with the Rail Trail, it offers a range of activity options. Horse riding is possible at both; the trail can also be explored by bicycle, while camping and hiking are also possible in the forest. This lets you plan according to whether you would like to use a multi-use trail or include activities in the forest.

Arboretum and picnic areas

Tallarook Arboretum extends along Dabyminga Creek. The site includes native vegetation, winding paths and several picnic areas. This gives it a different emphasis from the multi-use trail and activities in the State Forest: paths through the grounds and breaks at the picnic areas are part of the setting described here.

Freeman's Picnic Area has public toilets, barbecue facilities and tables. Check the facilities on site, as they may change. CWA Reserve Park has a playground with a merry-go-round, climbing equipment, a slide and swings. Tallarook Outdoor Pool has a 22-metre swimming pool, a toddlers' pool, a water slide and shaded areas. If you plan to visit, check the current opening hours beforehand.

Market and local history

Tallarook Farmers Market takes place on the first Sunday of every month. It offers a wide selection of produce and creations from producers and creatives from across Victoria. As the market program may change, check the latest details before travelling.

Tallarook Mechanics Institute was rebuilt after a devastating fire in May 2018. The railway station building also has historical significance for the town: the restored building was used as a museum, focusing on the station's role in the community and surrounding area. In 2026, Tallarook Station is the only operating railway station on the Great Victorian Rail Trail.

These destinations offer different options to consider when choosing a stay: the trail as a multi-use route, forest and hiking activities, a picnic break, recreational facilities, or the market and local history.
