Omeo brings together historic sites and mining history with walking trails, birdwatching, mountain biking and golf. The options range from a short walk and cultural history to nature watching and extensive biking trails. Which of these interests you focus on can shape the character of your stay.
Historic traces in Omeo
The Omeo Historic Museum and Justice Precinct is considered the most completely preserved known 19th-century police station and courthouse complex in Victoria. The precinct includes five heritage-listed buildings; the collection is housed in and around the Historic Park. A police cookhouse and stables dating from 1883 are also part of it. Signs along both sides of Day Avenue, the Great Alpine Road through Omeo, provide information about the town’s development. The local tourism authority also reports that in 1966 the Omeo Pioneer Cemetery was classified by the National Heritage Trust as the first official burial ground in East Gippsland.
Mining history and walking trails
Another historic focus is Oriental Claims: the European mining company The Oriental Company worked the claims from 1876 to 1904. Trails around Oriental Claims include The Pioneers Lookout and Ah Fongs Loop. The distinction is useful when choosing a historical focus: the precinct represents police and courts, Day Avenue the town’s development, and Oriental Claims mining. Omeo’s historical range thus encompasses architecture, town history and company history as distinct topics. The precinct buildings dating from 1883 fall within the mining period from 1876 to 1904, helping place Omeo’s institutional and mining histories in context.
Short walks and nature
The Heritage Trail is a 1 km walking trail rated Grade 2, with information signs. Its short distance makes it a different scale from the extensive biking trails, while the Grade 2 rating also offers specific guidance for this walking option. Livingstone Creek is a habitat for woodland birds and is regularly visited by birdwatchers. If birdwatching is among your interests, the creek offers a distinct connection with nature alongside the historical and sporting attractions.
Mountain biking and other recreational options
Omeo Mountain Bike Park has 100 km of mountain biking trails with 20 descents for everyone from beginners to advanced riders; Omeo Pump Track has 13 km of progressive trails, from beginner level to “Gnarly.” Omeo Mountain Bike Park is in Livingstone Park on Creek Street in Omeo. Facilities at Livingstone Park include a paved pump track, toilets, barbecue areas, a bike wash and bike maintenance facilities. If particular facilities are important to your plans, check their availability in advance; facilities may change.
Golf is also available as a recreational option: Omeo Golf Club has a nine-hole course. For travellers who do not want to limit their interests to walking or biking, golf adds another specific activity to the options.
