Lake Boga lies on the northeastern edge of Victoria’s Mallee region. The lake covers approximately 800 hectares. Local attractions range from Second World War aviation history to kayaking, lakeside paths and wildlife. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture, prioritise activities on the water or take both interests into account.
Seaplane History and Art
The Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum site was part of the only purpose-built repair base for flying boats operated in Australia during the Second World War. The museum grounds are also home to a Catalina, one of only a few surviving examples of this significant wartime aircraft in Australia. Together, these features give Lake Boga’s aviation history a tangible identity.
At the GrainCorp site in Lake Boga, a silo art installation depicts a historic Catalina aircraft and well-known pilot George Urquhart “Scotty” Allan. The Lake Boga Story Wall offers a different cultural focus: built in 2000, it is one of six national symbols of reconciliation in Australia. This hand-cut glass sculpture in mosaic form depicts the region’s landscape, water, people, cultures, history and ways of working.
Activities on the Water
Lake Boga is a popular place for kayaking. Boats can be launched from several public boat ramps around the lake, and there is also a jetty for fishing on the lakeshore. If a boat ramp or the jetty is important to your plans, check its condition in advance. Redfin and populations of native fish, including Golden Perch and Murray Cod, are found in the lake.
You can also explore the area around the lake on foot or by bike: a 4.3 km paved path runs along the shore. As path conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Lagoons, Fish and Birdlife
Turtle Lagoon consists of winding lagoons teeming with wildlife. Rare Murray Hardyhead fish and a diverse range of birdlife can be found in Round Lake. Together with the fish species found in Lake Boga, these places offer different nature-focused options to consider when choosing your activities.
Play, Sport and Sailing
Lake Boga Recreation Reserve has a playground for younger visitors and sports facilities that host team competitions. This gives you the option of play and sport as well as water activities in the area.
The Lake Boga Yacht Club’s Easter Regatta is considered one of Australia’s largest inland regattas and draws hundreds of sailing enthusiasts from Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland. If you want to plan your trip around the regatta, check the dates and schedule in advance.
