Discover Queenscliff through three specific themes: coastal walks, maritime history and train rides. The routes vary considerably—from the shores of Swan Bay to clifftop views over Port Phillip Bay—while museums and historic trains offer further insights into the town. When choosing accommodation, it’s worth deciding what you want to focus on during your visit: walks, local history, or journeys by rail and water.

Coastal Walks and Varied Views

The section of the Bellarine Rail Trail through Queenscliff follows the shores of Swan Bay, a recognised wetland of international significance. Another route is the Ferry to Pier Trail, which passes through the Queenscliff Coastal Reserve and connects the ferry terminal and Queenscliff Harbour with Queenscliff Pier, Princess Park and the town.

The Lovers Walk passes through Coastal Moonah Woodland along the upper sections of Santa Casa, Narrows and Springs beaches. The Thwaites Walk, by contrast, follows the clifftop above Queenscliff Beach. From there, the view stretches across Port Phillip Bay to Point Nepean and the Mornington Peninsula. This sets woodland and beach sections apart from a route offering coastal and distant views.

Townscape and Maritime History

The history of Fort Queenscliff began in 1860, when an open battery was built on Shortland’s Bluff to defend the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The past is also present in the townscape. Queenscliff’s historic streetscapes include Victorian-era hotels, grand churches and picturesque fishermen’s cottages.

Hesse Street features outstanding examples of historic architecture, as well as art galleries, shops and dining options. The Queenscliffe Historical Museum presents the history of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale through three themes: “Origins and Environment,” “Creating Community” and “Queen of Watering Places.” These themes organise the museum’s historical focus; exhibition details may change.

The Queenscliffe Maritime Museum explores a maritime heritage shaped by its proximity to the entrance to Port Phillip Bay and the dangerous “Rip.” On display is the rescue boat “Queenscliffe,” which saved people and ships for fifty years. The exhibitions therefore offer a distinct focus alongside local history and architecture.

Guided Experiences and Habitats

The Queenscliff Heritage Walk is a one-hour-and-15-minute walking tour along the town’s streets and footpaths. It is followed by afternoon tea and a conversation with the guide; a walking tour only is also available to book. Check the schedule and inclusions before your trip.

The Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre in Queenscliff has an aquarium for visitors, a student laboratory and a classroom. Public access is limited during school terms; check the current programs before visiting. The area’s diverse habitats are suitable for activities such as rock pool exploration and exploring tidal mudflats. Programs and booking options may change, so it’s worth checking the latest information before making plans.

Train Rides and the Bay Crossing

The Swan Bay Express travels along Swan Bay in historic carriages. The eight-kilometre round trip starts and ends at Queenscliff Station; black swans and other migratory birds are often spotted. As the service is subject to change, check what rides are available for your dates. Bellarine Railway is a volunteer-run organisation offering steam and diesel train rides and related experiences between Queenscliff and Drysdale.

Various charter boats also depart from Queenscliff for activities on Port Phillip Bay. Operator availability and activity conditions may change, so check the relevant offering in advance. The ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento takes 40 minutes and carries passengers and cars across Port Phillip Bay. If you’re planning a crossing, check the current timetable and booking conditions.
