In Echuca, the history of river navigation takes centre stage. At Echuca Wharf, the heritage of paddle steamers comes together with several insights into the history of Australia’s inland river system. There are also tours, a historic town walk and cycling routes of varying lengths. Which of these options interests you most may help shape your plans for your stay.

Echuca Wharf and the history of the river

Echuca Wharf is a site listed on the National Heritage Register in Victoria. The Port of Echuca is a living monument to the 1870s. Visitors can explore the wharf above and below and enjoy views along the Murray River. This lets you experience the site not only through exhibitions, but also through its position on the river.

At the Discovery Centre, the exhibition tells the story of Australia’s inland river system and paddle steamers. The Evans Brothers’ Sawmill is a working exhibit. The Steam Display offers further insight into the technology: visitors can see original, working steam engines and pumps and meet the engineers who operate them. The P.S. Adelaide is the world’s oldest operating paddle steamer with a wooden hull.

A cruise also offers a way to experience the river’s history. Authentic paddle steamers depart daily from Echuca Wharf. A one-hour cruise departs from the wharf and includes commentary on the history of the paddle steamer trade and Echuca Wharf. The Port of Echuca also offers daily guided tours. Check schedules and tour details before your trip.

Museums and town walk

The Echuca Historical Society Museum is located in the Historic Port Precinct, in the heritage-listed complex of the police station and lock-up built in 1869. The complex is listed on the National Trust Register. The museum displays artefacts from riverboats. If you’d like to explore collections beyond river navigation, the Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum in Echuca has more than 20,000 beer cans and related memorabilia. Guided tours are available; confirm tour arrangements before your visit.

The Echuca Historical Society also offers a one-hour guided historical walk through Echuca’s heritage area. The walk is offered seasonally. If you’d like to include it in your plans, check available dates before your trip.

Cycling routes and other options

For a short ride to the Port of Echuca, an easy route of 800 metres each way is listed. The Campaspe River Shared Pathway is also rated as an easy ride and runs for 3.5 kilometres each way along the Campaspe River. Two pedestrian bridges provide access back to the centre of Echuca. Another option is the Warren Street Shared Pathway: it is 3.5 kilometres each way and connects the west of Echuca.

The longest cycling route described here leads to Christie's Beach and is 8.7 kilometres each way. For most of the route, paths run along the Murray River; there is also the chance to spot native wildlife. The routes therefore differ both in length and in how they incorporate the river. Trail conditions may affect your route; take this into account when planning.

As an alternative to historical and river-related experiences, you could consider Echuca Back 9 Golf Course, with its tree-lined fairways running along the Campaspe River. Echuca offers a range of options, from river history and technology to a seasonal walk, cycling routes and golf.
