Dunkeld brings together cultural history collections and art in town with walking and hiking trails in the surrounding area. The Dunkeld Heritage Trail tells the story of the fire in January 1944; nearby trails lead to lookouts, and wildflowers bloom at Bainggug in spring. As the southern gateway to the Grampians Peaks Trail, Dunkeld therefore offers two distinct focuses to consider when planning: local history and culture, or trails through the landscape.
History and Nature in Town
The Dunkeld & District Historical Museum preserves a large number of artefacts from numerous periods and events in social history. These include material about Major Mitchell and his expedition’s exploration of south-western Victoria. This places broad social history alongside a specific subject concerning the exploration of the region.
Another collection is the Australian Light Horse Heritage Collection. It displays Light Horse memorabilia, including a charger’s tunic from Beersheba. The Dunkeld Heritage Trail tells local history in a different way: it recounts the fire in January 1944 that destroyed a third of the houses and shops in Dunkeld. The trail includes 26 sites with iron information plaques and is an easy, accessible walk through Dunkeld’s history for everyone.
The Dunkeld Arboretum combines a living collection of trees from around the world with an old sawmill. The collection’s plant diversity and a historical feature can therefore be found in the same place.
Art and Regional Cuisine
The Dunkeld Garage Gallery gives artists the opportunity to present their work to visitors and locals. Visits are by appointment only. The Waiting Room Art Gallery displays fine ceramics, ceramic sculptures, paintings and drawings by Anne Fleming; it is opposite the Royal Mail Hotel. It also takes part in Dunkeld’s Galleries and Gardens weekends on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month. Check the specific dates before your trip.
Local specialities have a clear focus too: The Old Bakery specialises in handmade sourdough bread, gourmet pies, pastries and cakes. This adds a specific culinary aspect of Dunkeld to its cultural offerings.
Walks and Views in the Surrounding Area
Nearby trails offer different highlights. The Wurgarri (Mount Sturgeon) Walk provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges, volcanic plains and the community of Dunkeld. Bainggug (The Piccaninny) is an easy walking trail suitable for most hikers; wildflowers bloom there in spring. You can choose between a focus on panoramas and a walk with a seasonal nature experience.
The Mud-Dadjug (Mount Abrupt) Walk passes through bushland in Gariwerd and over sandstone outcrops to the summit. From there, the view stretches north to the Serra Range and south to Dunkeld. Its route and views therefore differ from the walks described at Wurgarri and Bainggug.
For hikers on the Grampians Peaks Trail, the Dunkeld and Grampians Visitor Information Centre offers public showers around the clock. Check the shower service again before your trip.
