Casey City brings together distinct nature and heritage themes. At Wilson Botanic Park, plants and wildlife take centre stage, while the Casey Bushland Reserves offer a different natural profile through their varied landscapes. Other highlights include the Old Cheese Factory, two distinct heritage walks and the Berwick Farmers Market. Choosing a focus is a good starting point for planning your trip.

Nature: plants, animals and habitats

Wilson Botanic Park is home to more than 1,000 different native and exotic plant species, as well as 80 bird species. Turtles, frogs, lizards and snakes also live there. Plants, birds and other animal groups therefore offer distinct nature themes. For nature enthusiasts, this is a combination of botanical diversity and several animal groups to consider when choosing what to explore based on personal interests.

The Casey Bushland Reserves offer a different nature focus. They cover more than 175 hectares of natural areas, including grassy woodlands, wetlands, coastal saltmarshes and heathlands; rare and threatened species can also be found there. Compared with Wilson Botanic Park, the emphasis shifts: the park features plant and bird species, as well as other animals, while the reserves showcase a range of habitats. This creates a clear distinction for nature lovers between the park’s species diversity and the reserves’ varied landscapes.

History and markets

The Old Cheese Factory includes the historic Springfield Homestead, the Cheese Factory and the Kitchen Wash House, which date from the 1860s. The site therefore comprises several named historic buildings. Its heritage walk features ten interpretive information panels about the site and the history of Casey. The walk connects the historic complex with the broader story of Casey.

The Berwick Heritage Walk highlights Berwick’s historic heritage and takes you along some of Berwick’s oldest streets. Compared with the Old Cheese Factory Heritage Walk, the focus shifts from the site and the history of Casey to Berwick’s street heritage.

The Berwick Farmers Market takes place at the Old Cheese Factory on the second Saturday of each month, from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. It offers fresh produce and handmade goods direct from the farm. This monthly event adds a specific market and food experience to the historical highlights. Market dates may change, so check the date before making plans.

Victoria in a broader context

Victoria as a broader destination offers additional, distinct themes. The Goldfields Track is 210 kilometres long and passes through some of central Victoria’s most historic towns and beautiful forests; it can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The Yarra Valley, around Healesville and in the hills of Nillumbik, Hurstbridge and Kangaroo Ground, is also home to more than 70 wineries. At a regional level, visitors can choose between a trail and a wine region experience; both are distinct Victoria themes beyond Casey’s highlights.
