Ballan offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: at Caledonian Park, the Werribee River and old riverside trees take centre stage; the Ballan Historic Tree Walk leads to historic trees in town; and at Ballan Mineral Spring Reserve, spring water and a view of the Moorabool River are part of the visit. There is also golf, changing art exhibitions and a monthly farmers’ market. When planning, consider whether you want to visit on a specific event date or combine different interests.
River, Trees and Playground at Caledonian Park
Caledonian Park covers 24.2 acres. The Werribee River flows from east to west through the park; visitors can walk along the river and look at the old trees on its banks. The river and the trees provide two specific points of interest for a walk in the park. A large playground adds a wave slide, curved slide, climbing wall, tunnel, ladder, vertical square rope climbing frame, swings and a fireman’s pole. Playground equipment may change. If you’re planning your visit around it, check the latest details beforehand.
Historic Trees and Golf
The Ballan Historic Tree Walk lets you take a leisurely stroll through Ballan and see the town’s historic trees. An interactive map guides you along the walk; QR codes at some trees provide stories about the trees and horticultural information. Unlike Caledonian Park, where the river and riverside trees are the focus, this walk draws attention to historic trees in town. The map and QR codes offer different ways to navigate and learn along the route.
Ballan Golf Club offers a shady, tree-lined golf course. It is mostly flat, but also has a few short, steep climbs and river crossings; its features also include Santa Ana couch greens. The mix of mostly flat terrain and occasional steep climbs shapes the course’s character. Course conditions and design may change.
Spring Water and Views at Mineral Spring Reserve
Ballan Mineral Spring Reserve is next to Bostock Reservoir. From the picnic tables, you can look out over the eastern arm of the Moorabool River. The reserve’s spring water is compared with the water of the Hepburn Springs region. Visitors can fill their own containers with spring water and take it with them. So, as well as offering a view, the place has a direct connection to the spring: you can fill up with water there rather than making the visit solely about the view.
Market, Art and Event Dates
The Ballan Farmers Market takes place on the second Saturday of every month. It usually features at least 25 stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, regional produce, distinctive crafts, and artisan breads and pastries. The number of stalls and the range of goods may vary from one market day to the next. Check the current calendar if you want to plan your stay around the market.
Ballan Arts Space regularly hosts new special exhibitions and changing collections by members of the Ballan and District Artists Collective. Its gallery shop features works by local artists and craftspeople; it is open during the Collective’s exhibitions. So, a visit to the shop depends directly on the exhibition dates. The Ballan Autumn Festival is another date on the calendar: the community organises it every year in March, but dates and programmes vary from year to year. The market and festival therefore follow different schedules—a monthly event and an annual March festival. Check the current dates and programme before planning your trip around them.
