Rossarden lies in the foothills of Ben Lomond. The town was founded in 1930 to serve the Aberfoyle tin mine. The former mine near Rossarden operated from 1931 to 1982. The mining history therefore spans the reason for the town’s founding through to the end of historical mining operations.
Local history and landscape
The Rossarden & Storys Creek Museum is being established by local volunteers in the former primary school. It is intended to showcase mining history, oral histories and photographs from the Aberfoyle era. The museum is scheduled to open in 2026. As it is still being set up, check before your trip whether a visit is currently possible.
Wild lupins grow in the surrounding area, and Rossarden is known for them. How many you see can vary by season. Fallow deer also roam the town’s streets, but sightings are not guaranteed. Neither of these nature-watching opportunities can therefore be relied on as part of a day’s itinerary.
Park, golf and walking trails
Rossarden Park has play equipment, barbecue facilities and toilets—a practical combination if you’re planning a stay in town. Another local attraction is the nine-hole golf course, overlooked by Ben Lomond. If golf is a deciding factor for your trip, enquire about playing opportunities in advance.
Storys Falls is signposted from Rossarden; the return walk takes 45 minutes. Track conditions and signage may change, so check both before setting out. The southern approach to Ben Lomond runs on foot from Storys Creek through snow gums to Tranquil Tarn and Stacks Bluff. The two nature destinations offer different experiences: Storys Falls is a clearly defined return walk, while the southern approach is a route passing several named destinations. If you’d like to spend time at the falls, allow extra time for that break in addition to the 45-minute return walk.
Getting there and practical planning
The road to Rossarden is sealed all the way. Road conditions may change, so check them before you drive. From Avoca, you can take an alternative route to Fingal via the southern side of Ben Lomond and Rossarden. This route information offers another way to include Rossarden on the drive between the two towns.
There is no petrol in Rossarden. Plan to refuel in Avoca or Fingal, and check availability before you drive. Getting there and refuelling are two separate parts of your planning: take road conditions into account as well as where you can get fuel.
