Rosny Park offers several distinct reasons to visit: art and events at Rosny Farm, exhibitions at the Schoolhouse Gallery, and time outdoors. When choosing what to see, consider whether a cultural event, a larger green space, or a walk or bike ride will shape your stay. Outdoors, the publicly accessible Rosny Parklands and the section of the Clarence Foreshore Trail are also options in their own right.

History and art in Rosny Park

Rosny Farm is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. Its history dates back to around 1806, when it began as a land grant to Richard Morgan, a former convict from Norfolk Island. Alongside this historical connection, Rosny Farm offers an annual program of exhibitions, festivals, concerts, performances and holiday activities. The farm thus brings together early history and a wide range of cultural events. If you are visiting Rosny Park for a particular concert, festival or performance, check the specific dates in advance, as individual events and schedules may vary.

The Schoolhouse Gallery showcases exhibitions by community art groups, emerging and established professional artists, educational institutions and young people; touring exhibitions are also included. The Barn at Rosny Farm offers a different focus: large-scale contemporary art exhibitions and installations, as well as national touring exhibitions, concerts and performances. This range is useful when choosing a cultural event: the Gallery features a variety of contributors and touring exhibitions, while The Barn also explicitly presents large-scale contemporary art.

Green spaces and walking trails

Rosny Parklands is an 18-hectare outdoor area open to the public. The grounds feature several green spaces, a variety of tree species and a walking path. The Rosny Golf Course was formerly located here; it closed in 2021. Today, the parklands are an open, grassy space. If you would like to spend time in nature during your stay, you will find more than just a single lawn here: there are also varied green spaces, trees and a path for walking. The open character of the parklands sets them apart from an outing focused mainly on a route and its views.

This section of the Clarence Foreshore Trail runs from Kangaroo Bay to Bellerive Beach. It is suitable for a short, family-friendly walk or bike ride. Views include yachts in Kangaroo Bay and a view across the Derwent to Mt Wellington. This section thus connects two named locations with a specific scenic outlook; the parklands, by contrast, offer open grassy areas, trees and a walking path. When deciding between these experiences, consider how you want to spend the day: a walk or bike ride with views along the foreshore, or time in a larger public green space.

Planning your stay

Rosny Park can be considered for a range of interests, without assuming a fixed itinerary. For art and performances, Rosny Farm’s annual program offers several types of events; the Schoolhouse Gallery and The Barn also differ in their exhibition focuses. If a particular event is the reason for your visit, check the dates in advance. For time outdoors, the publicly accessible Rosny Parklands and the section of the foreshore described above offer different options. This lets you shape your stay around culture, green spaces or a route with views across the Derwent.
