Randalls Bay offers three distinct landscape experiences: the sandy beach in the bay, the circuit walk around Echo Sugarloaf and the coastal track to Mickeys Beach. The Quarry Reserve Track adds a rehabilitated quarry and coastal heath to this selection. Each walk has its own focus: summit views, a coastal passage or habitats among gravel and coastal vegetation.

Circuit walk, summit and coastal heath

The Echo Sugarloaf Nature Trail is a circuit around Echo Sugarloaf in Randalls Bay. The track climbs the western slope to the 198 m summit and returns along the southern ridge. The ascent and return therefore follow different sides of Sugarloaf. The track offers views across Randalls Bay to the Huon River, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and the mountains to the southwest. If you want to choose a walk based on a summit destination and expansive views, this circuit is a good option.

The Quarry Reserve Track has a different focus. It passes through a rehabilitated quarry and over river gravel, with coastal heath alongside it. The habitats there include those of silver peppermints and Black Gums. Rather than a summit and distant views, this route focuses on the quarry, gravel and coastal vegetation. Together, the two walks offer different nature experiences: the scenic circuit around Echo Sugarloaf and a landscape shaped by its varied surfaces and plant habitats.

The Mickeys Beach Track begins at the western end of Randalls Bay Beach. It follows sandstone steps past the headland and along the coastal reserve to secluded Mickeys Beach. The sequence of beach, steps, headland and coastal reserve gives this route its own character. Unlike the Echo Sugarloaf Nature Trail, the focus here is on the coastal passage and the beach destination, not a circuit to a summit.

Beach and practical information

Randalls Bay Beach is a long sandy beach on a generally calm bay. Garden Island and Bruny Island shelter the bay; however, wind waves can occur depending on wind speed and direction. When planning your time at the beach, consider both its usually sheltered location and the possibility that wind may change conditions. If the beach is important to your stay, take the conditions on the day of your visit into account.

Parking, a barbecue area and toilets are available at Randalls Bay Beach for the Mickeys Beach Track. The public toilets are at Randalls Bay Beach, 232 Randalls Bay Road, Randalls Bay, Tasmania, Australia. Facilities and their availability may change, so check before your visit.

Randalls Bay lies in the coastal area that extends from Echo Sugarloaf State Reserve through Randalls Bay to Mickeys Beach. This places the named locations within the same coastal area, while the walks offer their own distinct landscape experiences. This gives you a choice of clear contrasts when planning: a circuit walk with summit views, a quarry and coastal heath, or a route with a beach destination. The bay itself has its own appeal, with its long sandy beach and wind-dependent wave conditions.
