Views and harbour history

From Port Huon, enjoy wide-ranging views of the Huon River, Bruny Island, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and the Hartz Mountains. The area also offers the history of a former trading port, a walking track along the Kermandie River, and opportunities for swimming and sports. These different highlights give you specific ways to shape your stay, whether you’re more interested in the scenery, maritime history or being active.

Port Huon was once a busy trading port and a destination for international apple ships. These ships carried the region’s famous fruit around the world for export. The original harbour remains and is now used by boats belonging to salmon producer Huon Aquaculture; these boats are not open to the public. This makes it easy to distinguish the harbour’s former role in the apple trade from its current use. For travellers interested in regional history, this change is a particular highlight: Port Huon brings together a former export trade and a different use today.

Walking along the Kermandie River

The Port Huon to Geeveston Walking Track starts in Port Huon, is 3 km long and runs through natural habitat along the Kermandie River. A 500-metre-long boardwalk branches off the track through wetlands to the Port Huon Sports and Aquatic Centre. After the riverside section of the track, the boardwalk passes through a second landscape: the wetlands. The two distances refer to different sections. If you’re comparing walking distances while planning your stay, you can consider the track and boardwalk separately.

Swimming and sports at the Centre

The Port Huon Sports and Aquatic Centre has a 25-metre indoor pool. It also offers swimming lessons and swimming classes for adults. The Centre has facilities for volleyball, netball, basketball and badminton. This adds a focus on swimming and various sports to the outdoor walking option. If your plans depend on a particular class or facility, check the latest information before your visit: programmes and details of individual facilities may change.

Tours from the marina and facilities at the docks

The Peninsula Cruising tour departs from Port Huon Marina, opposite the Kermandie Hotel. This locates the tour’s departure point in Port Huon; confirm availability before booking. It adds another type of activity to the walking and Centre options.

Next to the docks in Port Huon are Shipwrights Point Regatta Point, a playground and a motorhome dump point. For motorhome travellers, the dump point is a specific location; the playground is also by the docks. As individual facilities may be upgraded over time, it’s worth checking the latest information before your visit if any of them are important to your plans.

When choosing activities, you can consider the walking route and the facilities at its destination separately: the track and the adjoining boardwalk take you on foot through river habitat and wetlands; the Centre focuses on swimming and sports. Peninsula Cruising offers a tour with its own departure point at the marina. This lets you arrange the different options according to the types of activities you’d like to include in your stay.
