Legana lies at the southern end of the Tamar Valley, 12 kilometres northwest of Launceston. The drive to Launceston is stated as taking 15 minutes; traffic and route can affect travel time. Reasons for staying here include the wetlands on the edge of town, wine tastings, changing menus, and community play and sports facilities. Which of these matters to you depends on whether nature, food and drink, or physical activity is the deciding factor.
Wetlands and track status
The Tamar Island Wetlands cover 60 hectares of mudflats, lagoons and islands with diverse plant and animal life. The Tamar Valley Wetlands Centre on the edge of Legana offers a 500-metre boardwalk through estuarine wetlands to a birdwatching hide. This gives your stay a specific focus on nature and birdwatching.
From 6 July to 17 December 2026, the track through the Tamar Island Wetlands will be partially closed while two bridges and a section of the track are replaced. The Tamar Island Wetlands Centre and the track to the birdwatching hide will remain open. If you are planning a visit during this period, check the track route before you go.
Wine, food and workshops
Bellebonne’s cellar door at Evenfall, 2 Upper McEwans Rd, Legana, offers wine tastings and wine sales from Wednesday to Sunday, 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. If you are setting aside time specifically for this, check the latest opening details before travelling.
Timbre is a place to eat and drink. Its food and drink menus are constantly evolving and are supported by a local community of diners, producers and gardeners. If a particular offering matters to you, ask about the current menu.
FermentHQ in Legana advertises upcoming fermentation workshops; workshop dates may change. If you would like to include a workshop in your trip, confirm the date directly with the provider in advance.
Play and sports facilities
The facilities differ according to the amenities listed for each. Tanner Drive Reserve has a fenced off-leash dog area and two swings. Jelisa Court Playground has a bike path, picnic tables, a slide and two swings. Orchards Estate Playground offers nature play, ball-sport facilities, slides and a flying fox. Park facilities may be updated; check the current council list before making a specific visit.
Two other places are options for cricket and sports. Legana Recreation Youth Space includes a recreation area with a cricket pitch. Legana Sports Oval has a full-sized sports oval and a cricket pitch as well. The oval has different access arrangements during and outside school hours: during school hours, it can be used by the school community; outside school hours, by the wider community. If you are planning organised use, confirm the current access arrangements beforehand.
