Nature and culture in Circular Head Council offer a wide range of experiences: a circuit walk that takes about an hour, nocturnal penguin watching, coastal landscapes and historical collections. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether hiking, wildlife, landscapes or cultural history should be the focus. The options also differ in whether they centre on a specific circuit-walk duration, a day trip or different ways of exploring.

Trails, Coast and Wildlife

The Nut Summit Circuit is a 2.7-kilometre circuit walk across the plateau and takes about an hour. This approximate duration gives you a concrete guide for planning your day. The Nut State Reserve is a breeding ground for short-tailed shearwaters, peregrine falcons, Australian kestrels and little penguins. At Godfrey’s Beach, a purpose-built, red-lit platform allows visitors to watch little penguins come ashore at night and make their way to their burrows. This places a circuit walk with a defined duration alongside nocturnal wildlife watching as distinct nature experiences.

In Rocky Cape National Park, sea caves, rock pools and secluded beaches are among the landscape’s notable features; the area is suitable for fishing and swimming. The park is primarily geared towards day trips and is best explored on foot. This gives a visit a clear day-trip character. As track conditions and facilities may change, check them before your visit.

Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area can be explored in conventional or four-wheel-drive vehicles, by canoe and on foot. Vehicle track conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The landscape includes a large part of Tasmania’s extensive peatlands, as well as some of the state’s largest dune fields. Unlike the sea caves and rock pools of Rocky Cape, the focus here is on peatlands and dune fields.

Culture and History

Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area is part of the homelands of the four clans Peerapper, Manegin, Tarkiner and Peternidic of the North West nation. The Nut State Reserve protects significant Tasmanian Aboriginal and historical heritage sites. In this way, homelands and protected cultural sites stand out as distinct themes alongside the nature experiences.

Circular Head Heritage Centre has an extensive collection of fossils and geological specimens. It also displays local Aboriginal cultural objects, as well as historical machinery and household items. The collection therefore appeals to a range of interests: Earth history, Aboriginal culture, and everyday and technological history. By contrast, Stanley’s streets are lined with colonial buildings and elegant cafés; this architectural character gives the town a different emphasis from the Centre’s collection.
