Yerevan combines a long urban history with a diverse museum and arts scene. Erebuni is a notable starting point: the city’s founding is associated with the construction of the fortress in 782 BC. Important museums, parks, cafés and cultural centres are located in the city centre. Squares, churches and a range of museum themes offer further highlights. You can shape your stay around history, art or city life.

Erebuni and the History of Yerevan

Yerevan’s founding is dated to 782 BC, when the Erebuni fortress was built. Erebuni was also a fortified city, founded by Argishti I on Yerevan’s southeastern outskirts. These two connections make the historical context concrete: the city’s founding is linked to the construction of the fortress, while Erebuni is described as a fortified city in its own right.

The Erebuni Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve was founded in 1968 and is an important Urartian research centre for the region. The UNESCO Tentative List entry “Urartian Heritage of Yerevan” also places Erebuni in a broader context: it also includes Karmir Blur and the Biainian Tomb. Tentative List status is not the same as inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Biainian Tomb is considered the only known monumental Urartian tomb in the Caucasus.

City Centre, Squares and a Tour

Yerevan’s main museums, parks, cafés and cultural centres are located in the city centre. Yerevan is also considered a city that can be explored on foot. For an overview, there is also the official Yerevan City Tour: the 90-minute tour introduces the city’s history, culture and architecture, as well as its monuments and sights. It starts and ends at France Square.

The tour uses open-top double-decker buses; guides are available in Armenian, English and Russian. The buses are accessible to people with disabilities. Vehicle details, languages and accessibility may change; check the latest information before your visit. As a compact overview, the tour offers a different focus from a museum visit, where you can explore a single subject in greater depth.

The city’s well-known places also reflect Yerevan’s different facets. Republic Square is the city’s central and most famous square, and is considered a symbol of Armenia. At the Cascade, art, architecture, urban life and green spaces come together. Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church is Yerevan’s mother cathedral. It was built between 1996 and 2001 to commemorate the 1,700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as Armenia’s state religion. Kond, meanwhile, is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in central Yerevan.

Museums with Different Focuses

The Matenadaran is dedicated to manuscripts and research: it is a manuscript archive, museum and scientific research institute. The National Gallery of Armenia is one of the country’s major art museums, while the Yerevan History Museum represents Yerevan’s cultural heritage. These different focuses offer distinct ways to explore the city and Armenia’s art and cultural history.

Other museums have their own distinctive focus. The Sergey Parajanov Museum is one of Yerevan’s most visited museums. The Museum of Folk Arts, named after Hovhannes Sharambeyan, promotes both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The Cafesjian Center for the Arts presents contemporary art in Armenia. When planning your visits, you can therefore choose between art, city history, manuscripts and folk art, rather than treating all museums as similar stops.

Everyday Life and Food

Yerevan has hundreds of cafés, restaurants, markets, pubs and food venues. The culinary scene includes both traditional dishes and cuisines from various countries. You can tailor your food choices to the day’s interests, whether you want to delve further into the city’s history after a museum visit or focus on a different culinary experience.

Tourist information centres, maps, apps, multilingual guides and tourist services can help you find your way around. Together with the concentration of key facilities in the city centre, these resources make planning easier when you want to balance cultural sites, city life and breaks throughout the day.
