Agarak offers nature enthusiasts two distinct perspectives: the area spans a wide range of elevations and habitats; the designated butterfly trail focuses on riverside specialists and their flight season. Agarak City Park complements these nature themes with birdwatching in a leafy urban green space.
Landscape and Biodiversity
The Agarak area extends along the eastern slopes of the southern Zangezur Range, at elevations from 585 to 1,890 metres. Its habitats include rocky, wormwood-dominated, structurally varied and shrubby semi-deserts, as well as juniper forest, riverside scrub, deciduous woodland edges and orchards. Those interested in the differences between dry areas, riverside vegetation and woodland edges will find several distinct landscape types within one area.
A survey of the protected area recorded 69 butterfly species in the Agarak area, representing 29 percent of the species found in Armenia. The guide to the Agarak Trail lists more than 70 butterfly species that can be observed over the course of the year. The first figure comes from a survey of the area; the second refers to potential observations along the trail throughout the year.
One particular species also gives Agarak a special point of interest for butterfly enthusiasts: Krueper's Small White occurs in rocky areas. Within Meghri District, it is found only in Agarak.
About half of the Agarak area lies within the Zangezur Biosphere Complex. The area was designated a Prime Butterfly Area in 2014; later, part of it was included in the Emerald Sites Network. These details also place nature watching in the context of protected areas.
Agarak Trail: Habitat and Season
The designated Agarak butterfly-watching trail is about 300 metres long. It runs at an elevation of approximately 690 to 700 metres and has a gradient of less than five degrees. Its focus is on butterflies specialised in riverside habitats. Their jungle-like habitat is surrounded by hot, dry semi-desert.
The best time to visit is from mid-May to mid-June, when about 40 to 50 butterfly species are in flight. This gives you a specific guide if you want to plan your nature watching around butterflies. If you plan to visit the trail, check its current accessibility beforehand.
Bird species reported along the trail include the Levant Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Hobby, Syrian Woodpecker and Eurasian Golden Oriole. National park staff have been trained in species identification and trail guidance for the Agarak Trail. The trail’s profile therefore includes both butterfly and birdwatching, though the two do not necessarily share the same seasonal focus.
Birdwatching in Agarak City Park
Agarak City Park is a leafy urban green space that attracts songbirds, woodpeckers and seasonal migratory birds. This gives it a different nature focus from the butterfly trail: the park is about birdlife in an urban setting, while the trail is associated with a clearly defined season and its riverside habitat.
Agarak City Park can be reached from Meghri by car via the M2. The trail provides specific guidance for choosing your travel dates for butterfly watching; the city park complements the nature offering with songbirds, woodpeckers and seasonal migratory birds.
