Haghpat Monastery was founded in 976 by Queen Khosrovanush. Its construction history spans the 10th to the 13th century; in the Middle Ages, Haghpat was a flourishing cultural and intellectual centre. The founding year and construction period tell two different aspects of the story: the year marks the beginning, while the longer period places the monastery’s development in context. Together with Sanahin, Haghpat offers a gateway to the medieval history of Lori in Armenia.
Monasteries and Historic Sites
Sanahin was built in the 10th century and is located in the village of the same name near Alaverdi. Its date provides a concrete comparison with Haghpat: both are medieval monasteries, but Haghpat’s construction history extends into the 13th century, while Sanahin dates to the 10th century. Akhtala Fortress and Monastery adds another facet to this historical picture. Forests, Gorges and the Debed
Lori’s landscape includes dense forests, dramatic gorges and the picturesque Debed. At Stepanavan Dendropark, the world of plants comes to life through an international collection: the park features more than 500 tree species from different parts of the world, including five California redwoods. Comparing the wide-ranging collection with these five specifically named trees gives the visit a concrete botanical focus.
Hiking and Outdoor Activities
On the Debed, Rafting Armenia takes participants through calm waters and rapids, accompanied by experienced instructors. The LORE Adventure Park in Stepanavan offers a different kind of physical challenge, with a demanding rope course and a challenging climbing wall. The activities have different focuses: one centres on stretches of river, the other on the rope course and climbing.
The World Heritage Trail in the northern province of Lori connects the monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat. The “Sanahin to Haghpat Monasteries” hiking route is listed as 10.9 kilometres long, taking four hours, and of moderate difficulty.
