Kalavan combines an archaeological focus with named routes. A Stone Age settlement lies near the Barepat River; visitors can cycle to Kalavan from Drakhtik or Tsovagyugh. An off-road jeep route runs between Tsovagyugh and Kalavan. This gives you two main perspectives to consider when planning your trip: early settlement and choosing a type of route.
A tourist destination with an official name
The Government of Armenia has designated Kalavan, Ttujur, and Dprabak as the tourist destination “Kalavan” in Gegharkunik Marz. The decision was issued on December 25, 2025, and came into force on January 4, 2026. The official designation therefore includes three explicitly named places, not just the place of the same name. When you consider Kalavan as a destination, you will encounter both the name of the individual place and the name of the tourist destination.
Stone Age and Early Bronze Age
The archaeological settlement lies near the Barepat River. The area may contain several Stone Age campsites. Other finds include Early Bronze Age graves, stone structures, obsidian and flint quarries, simple weapons, and animal bones in which spearheads were found. The finds therefore include different kinds of traces: settlements and structural remains, as well as quarries and artifacts.
The chronology is also varied. The settlement and the possibly multiple campsites belong to the Stone Age, while the graves are attributed to the Early Bronze Age. This distinction helps avoid grouping the finds into a single period. For travelers interested in early settlement, Kalavan offers a specific cultural-history focus, with named features that differ in type and chronological classification.
Cycling and Off-Road Routes
Cycling routes lead to Kalavan from Drakhtik or Tsovagyugh. There is also an off-road jeep route between Tsovagyugh and Kalavan. Two starting points are therefore named for the cycling routes; Tsovagyugh is the named place at the other end of the jeep route.
The options differ in their combination of transport and starting point: cycling routes are described from two places, while the off-road jeep route runs between Tsovagyugh and Kalavan. Tsovagyugh features in both types of route, while Drakhtik is also included as a starting point for the cycling route. When comparing the options, you can therefore focus on the mode of transport that interests you and the named starting point.
Which focus would you like to shape your trip?
The archaeological finds give Kalavan a cultural-history focus; the routes describe different connections and modes of transport. These topics address different questions: What interests you about the place’s early history, and what kind of route would you like to include in your plans? If you are looking for a holiday rental in Kalavan, you can first decide which of these focuses matters most for your trip. That way, choosing a destination begins with a specific interest rather than a general list of possible activities.
