An hour spent looking at constellations, a hiking trail to the crater of Aragats, and medieval monasteries: Aragatsotn offers different ways to experience the sky, the landscape and history. Visitors exploring the region can focus on nature and hiking, stargazing or culture—without reducing these themes to a single way of traveling.
Stargazing with different visit durations
The W. Ambartsumian House Museum offers a 40-minute visit. The 2.6-meter telescope can be viewed during the day as part of a one-hour visit. During nighttime observations with a professional small telescope, visitors can spend an hour observing the night sky and constellations; visiting hours vary by season. The museum, daytime visit to the large telescope and nighttime observation therefore differ not only in subject, but also in their stated duration. Those particularly interested in astronomy will find specific visit options here, whose seasonal hours should be taken into account when planning.
Highlands, Lake Kari and trails on Aragats
The elevation of Aragatsotn ranges from 950 to 4,090 meters above sea level. Mount Aragats is the highest mountain in Armenia; Lake Kari lies on its southern side at an elevation of 3,200 meters. The most accessible route up the mountain is on the southern slope and starts at Lake Kari. Another hiking trail leads from the village of Aragats through the Gegharot River gorge to the mountain’s crater. It is 14 kilometers long.
Gegharot Waterfall is also located on the slopes of Aragats. It can be reached either by driving off paved roads or by hiking about 10 kilometers from the village of Aragats. Access conditions may vary depending on the season and road conditions; check them before planning.
Kasagh Gorge: landscape and monastery route
The Kasagh River Gorge is approximately 70 kilometers long and up to 200 meters deep. A hiking trail connects Hovhannavank and Saghmosavank. Saghmosavank was an important center of scholarship and calligraphy and had a medieval higher school. The combination of gorge scenery and educational history offers more than one perspective on this part of the region.
Amberd Fortress and archaeological heritage
Amberd is now the largest standing fortress in Armenia and lies on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats. Its location and status make it a prominent reference point in the region’s cultural history. Agarak is also among the notable archaeological discoveries: the site has been officially designated by the Armenian government as a historical and cultural reserve. Together with Saghmosavank, Agarak shows that Aragatsotn’s cultural heritage includes both archaeological sites and places with a historical educational role.
Activities at Aparan Reservoir
Aparan Reservoir is suitable for camping, picnics and hiking, and today supplies water to the Ararat Valley. The marked Oh Dam! hiking trail leads to particularly scenic spots near the reservoir. Supman.Armenia also offers stand-up paddleboarding on the water; since operator information can change, it is worth checking the current offer details before planning. This means that several described options are available at Aparan Reservoir: spending time outdoors, a marked hiking trail in the surrounding area and a water sport.
Wineries and regional specialties
Aragatsotn has dozens of modern wineries that welcome guests for tours and wine tastings. In Ashtarak, visitors can also take master classes in baking gata and lavash and making sujukh and arishta. These products are traditional in Ashtarak and the Aragatsotn region. Workshop availability may vary. Those interested in regional cuisine can learn about artisanal and culinary traditions as well as winemaking.
The Armenian government declared the settlements of Aparan, Tsaghkahovit, Yeghipatrush, Aragats, Hartavan and Geghadzor, as well as Mount Aragats, the “Aparan” tourist destination in Aragatsotn Marz. The decision is dated December 25, 2025, and came into effect on January 4, 2026.
