In Ushuaia, several paths lead to the history and culture of Tierra del Fuego: through museums in historic buildings, on excursions to archaeological remains, and along murals throughout the city. There are also natural areas and routes featuring a wide variety of landscapes and views. You can organize your discoveries around the topics that interest you most.

Cultural history in different places

The Museo Marítimo, Museo Antártico, and Museo de Arte Marino are located in Ushuaia’s former prison complex. The Museo del Fin del Mundo preserves the history and culture of Tierra del Fuego in two historic buildings connected with the city’s development. Together, the museums offer different perspectives on maritime, Antarctic, and artistic themes, as well as the region’s history.

An admission ticket to the Museo del Fin del Mundo gives you access to both buildings for three days. Guided tours are available at scheduled times in each building. If you’re planning a museum visit, check the latest tour times in advance.

You can also encounter culture outside the museums: Ushuaia has numerous murals throughout the city, connected with the strong cultural identity of Fuegian artists. An excursion to Isla H includes an approximately one-hour interpretive walk and archaeological remains of the Yámana people. Urban art, museum collections, and archaeological evidence thus offer distinct cultural experiences.

Nature, trails, and views

Hiking, fishing, and guided canoeing are possible in Tierra del Fuego National Park. The trails vary in difficulty. Área Natural Protegida Vinciguerra y Valle del Arroyo Chico covers 4,245 hectares between the Andorra and Río Chico valleys. Its landscapes include extensive wetlands, peat bogs, permafrost areas, and highland wetlands.

Glaciar Martial is about seven kilometers from downtown Ushuaia. Alpine skiing and snowboarding are among the winter activities, while hiking is available in summer; operating conditions can change. Check the latest seasonal information before your visit. The Circuito Mirador de las Lagunas at Glaciar Martial also leads to a viewpoint with a 180-degree panorama of the Beagle Channel. Conditions at the viewpoint may vary.

Bahía Encerrada Nature Reserve is home to more than 50 bird species and has marked trails, boardwalks, and viewpoints. The loop trail is open to visitors without access restrictions, and interpretive information panels supplement the route. Check access information before your visit. The route to Laguna Esmeralda is part of Ushuaia’s tourist offerings and is used for recreation by visitors and local residents. Check trail conditions before setting out on this hike.

Excursions and regional cuisine

Near Ushuaia, Puerto Almanza combines coastal scenery with the history of the island’s first European settlements and the culture of artisanal fishing. The route from Ushuaia follows Ruta 3 and then Ruta Provincial J to Puerto Almanza; the distance is 75 kilometers. Boat trips to the islands in the channel depart from there. Some restaurants offer activities for the day.

Estancia Harberton is 75 kilometers from Ushuaia and is considered one of the first permanent European settlements. It belongs to the Bridges family, founders of the first Anglican mission, and offers an excursion focused on history, science, and gastronomy. For another culinary perspective, centolla, Patagonian toothfish, and Fuegian lamb are presented in Ushuaia’s tourist offerings as typical regional dishes.
