Nine different types of thermal mineral water give Rosario de la Frontera a clear theme, but the town is about more than bathing. Art history, a historic main square, local handicrafts and green hills offer other perspectives. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether the town’s cultural sites or the thermal attractions around Hotel Termas will shape your stay. This lets you combine different interests without cramming every activity into the same daily itinerary.

Thermal Waters and Historical Connections

Visitors can bathe in nine different types of thermal mineral water in Rosario de la Frontera. Hotel Termas de Rosario de la Frontera is on Avenida Palau, four kilometers south of Rosario de la Frontera. In Departamento Rosario De La Frontera, the wider travel destination, Hotel Termas became South America’s first thermal center. Antonio Palau built the hotel in Los Baños in 1886.

The thermal grounds in Rosario de la Frontera also have a nine-hole golf club. This adds another leisure option to the thermal attractions. The geographical distinction is useful when choosing a hotel: Hotel Termas is south of town, while Plaza Independencia, the museum and handicrafts are among the cultural attractions in town.

Green Countryside and Trails

The green countryside is ideal for birdwatching and active tourism. The hills around Rosario de la Frontera offer opportunities for trekking, horseback riding, mountain biking and birdwatching. You can choose between observing nature and more active pursuits, without needing to commit to a particular route or duration.

Cerro El Salvador, near Hotel Termas, is on Ruta Nacional 34 and has two trails: Aguas Chicas and Sendero de la Cruz. Dique de Rosario de la Frontera is also nearby, on the road to Ruta 34. It attracts locals and tourists visiting the thermal town. These places add further destinations in the scenic surroundings to the activities in the hills.

Art, Town History and Handicrafts

The Museo Quinquela Martín has sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints by Argentine artists from the mid-20th century. It was founded and opened on October 12, 1968, to introduce children from the surrounding area to the visual arts, spark their interest and encourage them. Its collection and founding history thus offer two different insights: into works from a particular period in art history and into the museum’s original educational purpose.

Plaza Independencia was laid out on June 20, 1873, as the center of the town’s first nine blocks. The foundation stone of the parish church that stands there was laid across from the main square in 1874. Paseo de Artesanos is also across from the square, on Calle San Martín. Opened in 2017, it brings together works by local artisans. The Sikh temple Gurdwara Nanak Sar is also located on Avenida Palau, at the entrance to town.

Cine Teatro Güemes is also part of the town’s cultural history: after years of inactivity, it reopened in a fully renovated building. Along with the museum, main square and handicrafts, it forms a cultural offering that spans visual art, town history, crafts and a reopened theater.

Traditions and Dated Events

Chaya Rosarina has its roots in an Andean harvest tradition. Flour, basil and snow symbolize coming together, communal joy and celebrating together. The 2026 edition, announced for that year, was included in the province of Salta’s Fiestas Populares program. A separate event was the second Feria de las Legumbres, held in August 2017, with regional food stalls, handicraft exhibitions and folk performances.

A 2019 Senate document describes the pilgrimage to Virgen de la Montaña as an annual tradition on August 15. It covers six kilometers from Rosario de la Frontera to Cerro Termas and the grotto of Nuestra Señora de la Montaña. The celebration in honor of Virgen del Rosario is associated with October 7. If you want a festival to be the reason for your trip, check the program for your chosen year.
