At the entrance to Piedra del Águila is the Paseo de las Esculturas, featuring sculptures made from recycled iron. For visitors, the town combines a distinctive connection to art with experiences of the landscape: viewpoints overlook the valley and hills, and a beach area on the reservoir lies nearby.
Sculptures and Cultural Heritage
The Tallados Borges Linares are part of Piedra del Águila’s cultural expression. The carving “Maternidad India” by Juan Borges Linares is up to ten meters tall. The Monumento al Águila is regarded as a symbol of the landscape and local identity. The Museo Arqueológico shares stories, traditions and the region’s cultural heritage. These places and works offer different points of interest: a named work of art, a symbol of local identity and regional traditions.
Walking and Taking in the Landscape
The Mirador Hidroeléctrica and the panoramic walking trails offer opportunities to take in the geography of the valley and hills. Alongside the named viewpoint, the walking trails provide another way to appreciate the landscape. Piedra del Águila’s natural viewpoints can be explored on foot; trekking is also one of the town’s tourist and recreational activities. If you’re planning your stay around scenery and exercise, viewpoints and trekking offer two distinct ways to do so.
Regional Location and a Trip to the Water
Piedra del Águila is on National Route 237, almost halfway between Bariloche, San Martín de los Andes and the provincial capital, Neuquén. This location places the town within the region’s travel routes. You can consider it alongside the attractions in town and nearby when choosing where to stay.
Kumelkayen is located on the reservoir shore, five kilometers from Piedra del Águila. Its beach area offers a different landscape from the viewpoints over the valley and hills. The waterfront promenade has lighting and landscaping along more than 250 meters. If you’re planning to visit Kumelkayen, check the beach area’s current conditions before you go.
Activities and Event Dates
Fly fishing and light spinning are possible on the Río Limay, 19 kilometers from the town center. Alongside trekking in town, these offer two different fishing options nearby. Piedra del Águila’s tourist offerings also include the Fiesta Provincial de las Marrones Migratorias, held every year toward the end of the summer season. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
Another Event in the Collón Curá Department
The Fiesta Provincial del Agua Mineral is held every February in Santo Tomás, in the Collón Curá Department. Livestock farmers, artisans and producers from the region come together there. They present textiles, leatherwork and goat meat raised with mineral water. This event in Santo Tomás is a separate regional occasion from the Fiesta Provincial de las Marrones Migratorias in Piedra del Águila; the two festivals differ in both location and timing.
