Aluminé offers several distinct ways to plan your trip: a self-guided tour of local history and culture, nature trails and activities on the Río Aluminé. There are also archaeological traces at Cerro Quilque Lil, and the town is part of hiking and themed routes. You can therefore plan your visit around your interests in culture, landscapes or water activities.

Cultural History and Traces at Cerro Quilque Lil

“Aluminé de a pie” is a self-guided cultural walking tour in Aluminé that highlights local history and culture. The route takes about an hour, is 1.5 kilometres long and has a low difficulty level. This makes it easy to fit its duration and distance into your day without turning it into a longer hiking programme.

Another perspective on the area’s history can be found at Cerro Quilque Lil. In December 2020, the area around the hill was officially designated an urban protected area under Municipal Ordinance No. 1692 to preserve its biodiversity. The hill is also home to four pre-Hispanic stone enclosures containing archaeological remains more than 900 years old. The protected area and the archaeological finds represent different aspects of the place: nature conservation and evidence of earlier settlement.

Nature Trails, Araucaria Forests and Birdwatching

The Quilquelil Urban Nature Reserve has three hiking routes: Terrazas del Aluminé, Sendero Quilquelil and Mirador de los Cipreses. The area also has ancient Araucaria forests, and Aluminé’s landscapes are home to 136 bird species typical of Patagonia. Aluminé is also part of the Huella Andina hiking and nature trail network and the Ruta del Pehuén. As the northern gateway to Lanín National Park, the town is also connected to a wider landscape region.

For visitors especially interested in birdwatching and nature, another named offering was available in August 2026: Aluminé Birding – Avistaje de aves y observación de naturaleza was then a visitor experience authorized by the provincial government of Neuquén, guiding visitors through Pehuén forests and mountain landscapes. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, check its current availability.

River Activities and Cultural Events

Various types of kayaking and rafting are possible on the Río Aluminé. Rainbow trout and brown trout live in the Río Aluminé and its named tributaries. Aluminé thus offers several ways to experience nature: hiking trails on land, birdlife in the landscape and activities on the river. Which one suits you depends on whether you prefer exploring trails or setting aside time for water sports.

The Fiesta Nacional del Pehuén is also a recurring cultural highlight: it takes place every year during Holy Week in Aluminé. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year. The Museo Municipal y Centro de Interpretación El Charrúa is housed in the former main house of an estancia and adds a historic setting to the town’s cultural attractions.

A Wider Look at the Department of Aluminé

Other natural and cultural attractions are located in the Department of Aluminé and can be considered regional additions. The Chañy Protected Natural Area preserves Pehuén, lenga and ñire forests, as well as a diverse environment with animal species of importance to conservation. Within the same protected area, cultural values are connected to the Puel Community’s longstanding use of the land.

Lago Pulmarí is also in the Department of Aluminé and is a glacial lake. Its shallow shores and pleasantly warm summer water make it suitable for beach visits, walks along the lakeshore and trails connected to Huella Andina. Together with the attractions in the town itself, it forms part of a wider regional setting, while the features of the department remain distinct from those of the town of Aluminé.
