Capacho is a rural settlement in San Carlos with an identity of its own among the districts. The history of Escuela “Matea Serpa” gives the place a specific cultural connection. At the municipal level, San Carlos also offers landscape-based activities, culinary experiences, and agricultural infrastructure. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the local history of Capacho and a broader view of the municipality.

School history in Capacho

Escuela N° 6 in the rural settlement of El Capacho began operating on July 1, 1922. The school building had been made available by Francisco Janniello, the owner of Colonia “El Volcán” in San Carlos. In 1934, by Resolution 115/1934, the school was named “Matea Serpa” in honor of one of the first national teachers born in Mendoza. The school’s opening and its naming mark two milestones: operations began in 1922, and the name was bestowed twelve years later.

The current building of Escuela “Matea Serpa” in El Capacho, on the old Ruta Nacional 40 at kilometer 91, was inaugurated on April 1, 1959. In October 2022, the Chamber of Deputies of the Province of Mendoza declared the centenary of the founding of Escuela N° 1-228 “Matea Serpa” in San Carlos to be of institutional interest.

Getting to Capacho

Provincial roadworks also included repairs to the access road to the settlement of El Capacho; the announcement is dated July 5, 2019. Check the current condition of the access road before your trip.

A historical route listing places Capacho on Line 814 between Tunuyán, Pareditas, and Coronel Videla. Before traveling, check whether this bus line is currently operating.

San Carlos: activities, cuisine, and agriculture

In the municipality of San Carlos, Cañadón de la Salada is a particularly popular spot for trekking and rappelling. Conditions and booking requirements may vary. If you plan these activities, check the applicable conditions and booking options in advance.

At wineries in San Carlos, culinary experiences combine creative cuisine with regional products such as walnuts, oregano, and garlic. The availability of individual wineries varies, so check for your preferred date. At the municipal level, this brings together different themes: trekking and rappelling on the one hand, and cuisine and regional ingredients on the other.

Agriculture also provides a concrete point of reference. An infrastructure report published in July 2017 states that the Capacho irrigation canal in San Carlos serves an area of 910 hectares for irrigation. A report from 2005 names Hugo E. Toso as the manager of Finca El Capacho in the municipality of San Carlos, where modern agricultural management techniques were used. These details represent two aspects of the agricultural context: irrigation infrastructure and farming methods.
