The Iglesia San Blas de los Sauces and its patron saint festival give a trip to San Blas De Los Sauces a clear cultural focus. The church is opposite the main square, and celebrations in honor of Saint San Blas take place twice a year. Those planning a stay can therefore choose between the feast day in February and the smaller celebration in August.

The Iglesia San Blas de los Sauces

The temple dates from 1734; construction began toward the end of the 17th century. The Iglesia San Blas de los Sauces was built with adobe walls and wood. As the main temple of the Department of San Blas De Los Sauces, it is an important religious landmark in the town.

Its location also provides a clear point of reference: the Iglesia stands opposite the main square of San Blas. Its construction history, materials, and location offer different ways to learn about the building. The dates place its origins in time, while adobe and wood identify the traditional construction methods. The main square helps situate the church within the town.

The patron saint festival and its dates

San Blas celebrates its patron saint festival every year on February 3 in honor of Saint San Blas, the patron saint of throats and airways. The festival draws thousands of worshippers, pilgrims, and visitors from La Rioja Province and neighboring provinces. February 3 is also the saint’s feast day.

Additional celebrations take place on the third Sunday in August; these are smaller. Masses are held during the celebrations, and throats are traditionally blessed. This distinction makes timing especially important when planning a trip: February and August represent different scales of the same religious tradition. Visitors who want to include the festival in their stay can plan around the date.

Archaeology in the Department of San Blas De Los Sauces

Beyond the town itself, the Department of San Blas De Los Sauces offers other cultural attractions. The Hualco archaeological site is located in the department. There, interpretive walks along trails connect landscape, archaeology, and cultural heritage. Guided tours explain the Ciénaga, Aguada, Belén, and Sanagasta cultures and their relationship to the Camino del Inca, or Qhapaq Ñan. If you plan to take one of these walks, check in advance whether it is currently being offered.

The Centro de Interpretación de Hualco houses two exhibition rooms with original archaeological finds. These include ceramics, burial urns, grinding tools, and arrowheads. Ritual ornaments are also represented, including the Hualquito, made of malachite. The archaeological site and the exhibition offer different ways to explore regional history: the walks connect archaeological themes with landscape and cultural heritage, while the rooms display actual finds.

Scenic destinations in the wider travel area

The landscape can also be explored in its wider geographical context. La Olla is in Paraje Andolucas, twelve kilometers from San Blas, on Provincial Route No. 11 on the eastern slope of the Sierras del Velasco. The natural pool was formed by erosion from the Río Andolucas in granite rocks; it is also described as having crystal-clear water and native vegetation.

Another natural attraction in the department is the “Cola de la Novia” gorge in the Quebrada del Rincón area. Its waterfall is between 25 and 30 meters high and flows into a natural pool. Thus, San Blas’s religious tradition and architecture sit alongside archaeological and landscape attractions throughout the department. When looking for a hotel, it is worth first considering whether your stay will focus mainly on the town itself or also on these broader regional attractions.
