Every year on the second Sunday in December, the image of Niño Jesús de Gualco is brought from Ángulos to the administrative center of the Departamento de Famatina. It stays there until the second Sunday in January, then returns to its sanctuary in Ángulos. The Diocese of La Rioja documents this religious tradition, which is more than 150 years old. Ángulos is 37 kilometers from the administrative center.
The celebration in honor of Niño Jesús de Gualco at the sanctuary in Ángulos draws pilgrims and Promesantes. They come on foot, on horseback, or by vehicle to make requests, give thanks, and fulfill promises. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, the two Sundays mentioned each year provide a specific timeframe.
Choosing a Location and Finding Your Way
The administrative center of Famatina is located on Ruta Nacional 78. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish this road connection from the religious tradition in Ángulos: the image is carried between the two places, while the celebration takes place at the sanctuary in Ángulos.
Churches and Architectural History
In San José de Las Campanas, the church is designated as national historical and religious heritage. The Iglesia San Pedro de Famatina is a separate building. It was built in 1875 on the site of an earlier Dominican chapel, with contributions from the local community.
The Iglesia San Pedro de Famatina combines Neo-colonial architecture with distinctive features that can be described in detail: its adobe walls are more than a meter thick, and the façade has a pink bell tower. The area is therefore home both to a church with designated historical and religious significance and to a building with a more fully documented history of construction and architecture. If you are interested in religious history, these offer two distinct perspectives: the designation of the church in San José de Las Campanas and the construction history of the Iglesia San Pedro.
Mining History and the High Andes
Mina La Mejicana lies at an altitude of about 4,600 meters on Cerro General Belgrano, also known as Nevado de Famatina. Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was one of Argentina’s most important gold-producing sites. Historical tours at cableway stations and interpretation of the mining and industrial heritage are offered at the mine; availability may vary. Check in advance if you would like to include this activity in your plans.
The history of the Chilecito–La Mejicana cableway is also part of the mining story in the wider region. Opened in 1905, the cableway was 35 kilometers long and had nine stations. It transported ore from the high Andes to the city of Chilecito. The information about the mine and the cableway thus offers two different perspectives: the historical importance of gold mining and the route by which ore was transported to Chilecito.
Qhapaq Ñan and Trails in the Wider Area
In La Rioja Province, the UNESCO Qhapaq Ñan designation covers 42 kilometers of Inca roads that cross the Sierras de Famatina. This section includes the archaeological sites of Tambo de Chilitanca and Tambo de Pampa Real. The winding route is suitable for 4x4 vehicles and should be visited with a guide or an authorized travel agency. Road conditions may change.
In the immediate vicinity of the destination, near Tres Piedras, trails are suitable for trekking to Cascada de Goyo at an altitude of 3,300 meters, birdwatching, and exploring native flora and fauna. Access is only possible by 4x4; an authorized guide or travel agency is recommended for the visit. The trails near Tres Piedras are in the immediate vicinity of the destination.
