In Santa Florentina, the mining heritage tells the story of ore transport, industrial facilities, and the objects that recall this history. Nearby hiking trails and a hiking destination add another focus to the area: its landscape.

Mining History in Santa Florentina

The Cable Carril Chilecito–La Mejicana aerial cableway transported ore extracted from the “La Mejicana” mining district to the Fundición de Santa Florentina, which survives today as a ruin. Plaza de los Mineros – Santa Florentina is an open-air museum displaying mine carts, cable pulleys, tools, and mining memorabilia. The Fundición comprises walls, chimneys, and the remains of facilities dating from the early 20th century. Together, these sites show different aspects of the local mining heritage: ore transport, the industrial facility, and the memory of work in the district.

If you are especially interested in industrial history, this combination is a distinctive focus for planning your trip. The FundiciĂłn can be understood through its surviving structures, while the open-air museum focuses on objects from the mining industry. The ruins and the exhibition thus complement each other without offering the same kind of insight.

Hiking Trails and Trekking

The municipal tourism office highlights hiking trails connecting Santa Florentina with GuanchĂn. The Quebrada del Agua Negra is also nearby: a hiking destination in a mountain landscape with waterways, accessed from Santa Florentina. This gives you a choice between different experiences: a trail connecting two places or a hiking destination whose landscape is shaped by mountains and waterways. Outdoor conditions can vary; check them before setting out.

A municipal tourism agenda for September 2026 listed a trekking activity starting from the parking area at Station 2. Advance registration was required for the activities. If you are traveling at another time, check the current dates and registration requirements.

In the Wider Destination of Departamento Chilecito

Samay Huasi is also part of the cultural offerings in the wider destination of Departamento Chilecito. The manor house in the district of San Miguel was built in the early 19th century. After acquiring it, Joaquín Víctor González named it after the Quechua word for “house of rest.” The gardens include Puerta de Micenas, a gallery of roughly worked monoliths representing the seven Greek sages, and Puerta Etrusca. Samay Huasi also houses a small museum with archaeological, anthropological, and paleontological collections relating to minerals and natural sciences, as well as taxidermied native birds. This adds gardens and collections to the picture of the departamento, while mining heritage takes center stage in Santa Florentina.

Another distinct option in the wider Departamento Chilecito is Bodega La Riojana Cooperativa, whose main winery is in Chilecito. The tour visits the facilities, presses, and fermentation tanks, and ends with a wine tasting. Visit details may change, so check them in advance if you are planning a visit.
