San Javier is a community of the Indigenous Ocloya people. Trails branch off from a route that passes through the settlement, heading north to San Bernardo and Abra Mayo. The Ocloyas–San Javier route over Abra de Pinar is also relevant for planning your trip: it passes through a landscape with abundant green Yungas vegetation and has specific information on distance, ascent, and difficulty.

Ocloya Community and Northern Connections

The trails heading north lead to San Bernardo and Abra Mayo. A main trail from Abra Queñoal runs via Abra Mayo and Yaquispampa to San Bernardo and San Javier. Another regional connection is the corridor along the Río Ocloyas, which links San Javier, San Bernardo, and Quebrada de Huajra. An academic study published in 2002 described it as the most direct and most frequently used connection.

The Route over Abra de Pinar

The Ocloyas–San Javier route over Abra de Pinar is listed as 21.59 kilometers long, with an elevation gain of 1,660 meters, and is rated very difficult. Distance, elevation gain, and difficulty are all part of assessing the effort required. Route status and conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

On this route, a well-travelled vehicle track goes as far as Campo Rodeo; beyond that, the trail is a poor riding and packhorse path to Abra del Pinar. This change between sections is important for planning. Check trail conditions before departure.

Historical Information about Access

A 2014 account of the extension of Ruta Provincial 35 covered a 23-kilometer section between Abra Amarilla and San Javier. It was presented as progress for San Javier and other nearby places, and was intended to reduce travel time for a journey that had previously required going part of the way on horseback. The report at the time said that the trip to Tilcara had previously taken about 18 hours on horseback; it was now possible to make the journey by vehicle.

During a medical outreach in 2021, the journey via Ocloyas, San Javier, and San Bernardo was estimated to take about four hours, followed by another two hours on foot. These figures refer to different journeys and points in time. Check current road and trail conditions when planning your own trip.

Nature and Cultural Trails in the Wider Destination of Departamento Ledesma

The wider destination of Departamento Ledesma is home to Parque Nacional Calilegua, which is part of the UNESCO-recognized Reserva de Biosfera de las Yungas. The park’s elevation gradient ranges from Selva Pedemontana at 500 meters above sea level to Pastizales de Neblina at 3,600 meters, with Selva Montana and Bosque Montano in between. Ruta Provincial N° 83 runs for 23 kilometers through the park, revealing the transition from Selva Pedemontana forest to montane forest. It is a paved gravel mountain road that can be travelled by bicycle or motorcycle. Check road conditions before departure.

The park’s trails offer a range of experiences. The Guaraní interpretive trail “Nuestra Selva” presents the worldview of the Guaraní people at seven stations; information is available in Spanish and Guaraní. The accessible Somos Selva trail has a cement surface that makes it easier for people with reduced mobility to get around. Sendero Bosque del Cielo runs through the montane forest and ends at a rest area overlooking the Serranías de Calilegua.

The park’s other trails also showcase different aspects of the area: Sendero Seres Fantásticos features eleven sculptures made from scrap metal by artists from northwest Argentina. They depict mythological beings associated with nature. Sendero La Lagunita leads to a small lagoon that is an example of the Yungas’ aquatic ecosystem.
