The RĂo Xibi-Xibi divides the valley of San Salvador de Jujuy. In Doctor Manuel Belgrano Department, different themes for discovery meet: urban history and religious buildings on one side, protected Yungas landscapes and wildlife viewing on the other. Whether you are interested in historical collections, architecture, green spaces, or nature, each place has its own focus.

Culture between provincial history and architecture

The Museo del Cabildo presents the history of Jujuy Province in eight rooms. Its story spans ethnic origins, the colonial period, the pre-revolutionary era, and connections to Manuel Belgrano. Dramatic and audiovisual elements complement the historical themes. This approach differs from that of the Casa Museo Macedonio Graz, where a permanent exhibition focuses on the 19th century, original rooms, and personal belongings of the Jujuy journalist.

Individual buildings also preserve their own stories. Argentina’s oldest flag is kept in the Salón de la Bandera at the Casa de Gobierno. General Manuel Belgrano gave it to the people of Jujuy after the Jujuy Exodus in August 1812. The Catedral de San Salvador de Jujuy has a Baroque pulpit made of Ñandubay wood; the Basílica de San Francisco is notable for its gilded, carved-wood pulpit. The Capilla de Santa Bárbara, in turn, houses 18th-century paintings.

You can also encounter historic architecture at the Museo HistĂłrico Provincial, which is housed in a mansion dating from the mid-18th century where General Lavalle was killed. The building is designated a National Historic Monument. Together, these places reveal different facets of the cultural heritage, from collections and original rooms to striking pulpits and a building with national monument status.

From urban green spaces to the Yungas

The Parque Botánico Barón Carlos María Schuel is located on a 15-hectare site within the city. Visitors can observe birds, as well as flora and fauna. The Parque Provincial Potrero de Yala represents a different kind of natural environment: it is a core zone of the Reserva de Biosfera de las Yungas and protects montane forest and cloud grassland in particular.

The six Lagunas de Yala lie between montane forest and cloud grassland, providing habitat for birds and other species. More than 250 bird species and over 16 bat species are recorded in Parque Provincial Potrero de Yala. A viewpoint with panoramic views, a trout farm, and several trekking trails add to the park’s natural attractions. If you prefer to explore landscapes from different perspectives, the park offers a range of ways to engage, from habitats to trails and a designated viewpoint.

Parks, local highlights, and traditions

The facilities described at Parque San Martín include children’s play areas, fountains, spaces for various sports, a municipal swimming pool, some mechanical rides, and walking paths. As park facilities can change, check what is currently available before visiting. Parque Lineal Río Xibi Xibi includes the Las Lavanderas Amphitheater, dedicated to the women who once washed clothes in the river.

At Paseo de los Artesanos, also known as Plazoleta Antonio LĂłpez Iriarte, stalls sell regional sweets, empanadillas, and local wines. This offers a different local highlight from the religious tradition at Cerro Las Rosas, where a pilgrimage takes place every year on Good Friday, attended by worshippers from San Salvador de Jujuy. These two examples offer different themes to consider when planning your trip: a craft-focused market and a recurring religious celebration.

Planning your trip

San Salvador de Jujuy is located on paved National Routes 9 and 66. Gobernador Horacio Guzmán International Airport has good connections to the rest of Argentina. As flight routes can change, check current flights before booking. To help you choose, consider a simple comparison of themes: are you mainly interested in history and architecture, or are landscapes and wildlife viewing your priority?
