River landscapes, wetlands and culture take center stage in Goya Department. The city of Goya lies on the western bank of the Río Paraná, along the Riacho Goya. Here, nature experiences by the water meet the city’s squares, theaters and museums. By road, the department is accessible via National Route 12 and Provincial Route 27.

The Costanera and islands on the Paraná

Goya’s Costanera runs parallel to the Riacho Goya. It offers sweeping views of the Paraná river system, while green spaces, monuments, viewpoints, dining areas and recreational facilities line the waterfront promenade. Sports activities, craft markets, cultural festivals and open-air events are part of the year-round offerings here.

The Islas de las Damas offer a different kind of nature experience. This nature reserve, covering more than 1,400 hectares, lies 250 meters off the coast of Goya. Its habitats include riparian forests, inland lagoons, marshes, wetlands and natural bluffs. From the Costanera, you can reach the islands by boat; guided interpretive trails lead through the wetlands and introduce visitors to their biodiversity as well as GuaranĂ legends and culture. Check with Goya Tourism in advance for information about the arrangements for guided tours.

The islands are home to howler monkeys, capybaras and caimans; more than 100 bird species have also been recorded there. On fishing trips in Goya, you pass through natural channels, streams, sandbanks, lagoons and wetlands along the Paraná. Capybaras, caimans, waterbirds and howler monkeys are often seen in these landscapes. Trips are offered as half-day tours, full-day tours or special multi-day programs. This allows you to adapt the time commitment to your travel plans, as not all trips are the same length.

Fishing is also part of the nature experience: river fish mentioned here include surubĂ, dorado, pacĂş, manguruyĂş and armado. Fishing is subject to conservation and catch-and-release rules. When planning, you can choose between a guided wetland exploration along the island trails and a fishing trip.

Squares, theaters and museums in Goya

Plaza Mitre is the city’s main square. At its center stand the statue of the Madre Patria and the Pirámide de la Libertad, a replica of the Parisian pyramid. The Iglesia Catedral is another important landmark: inaugurated in 1884, it houses Nuestra Sra. del Rosario, the city’s patron saint.

The Teatro Solari was built by Tomás Mazzantini in 1873 and is considered Argentina’s oldest municipal theater; it is still in operation. Its auditorium is horseshoe-shaped and includes the orchestra stalls, lower boxes and two upper tiers. This combines a specific history of construction with a clearly structured interior. The Iglesia de San Roque y San Jacinto, known as “La Rotonda,” is designated a site of national historical interest. The Sociedad Italiana de Socorros Mutuos and the Club Social Argentino are also designated national historic monuments.

Museums in Goya include the Museo temático de la Policia and the Museo en memoria del Monseñor Devoto. The Museo de la Ciudad is housed in the former railway station and features an exhibition on urban anthropology from across the region. The Museo San Martiniano is located in the former Hotel de los Inmigrantes, on the grounds of the army regiment. These varied museum and architectural histories give the city further cultural points of interest alongside its squares and theater.

Events and seasonal planning

The Fiesta Nacional del Surubí lasts five days and combines sports, performances, food and culture. One of its highlights is the simultaneous launch of hundreds of boats onto the Río Paraná. The festival usually takes place in late April or early May; the exact dates may vary from year to year. So check the event dates if you want to plan your trip around it.

The season also matters if you’re planning a beach stay: Playa El Ingá on the Riacho Goya is described as the city’s main bathing area, and summer is considered beach season. Another local connection to the water is the Balneario El Inga bathing area, created through land reclamation and the construction of breakwaters. Parador El Inga has barbecue grills, an installed restroom and running water.
