San Pedro Norte lies on the historic Camino Real al Alto Perú. In the town center stands the Nuestra Señora de la Merced Church: its architecture combines Gothic architecture with a colonial style, and its tall cross is visible from afar. These provide two clear landmarks for getting your bearings in town—the historic route and the distinctive church building. If you’re planning your trip around cultural history, you can use these features as a starting point and then decide whether to include the riverside area in your plans.
History between the route, church and cemetery
The cemetery adds another timescale to this picture: it contains seven vertical tombs, built in different centuries. Their number and the span of time they represent make the tombs a distinct historical focal point alongside the church. Together with the Nuestra Señora de la Merced building, they create a contrast between church architecture and burial sites. If you enjoy tracing different historical threads, the Camino Real, church and cemetery offer three separate points of interest.
By the river: the Municipal Balneario
San Pedro Norte’s Municipal Balneario is located on the banks of the Los Tártagos River. It has restroom facilities, a swimming pool, a refreshment stand, and a sports court for basketball and volleyball. This offers a different focus for your trip alongside the cultural and historical attractions: the riverside setting and recreational facilities. When planning your day, you can choose whether to focus on the town’s history or the balneario. If use of the facilities is central to your plans, check their current availability in advance.
San Pedro Viejo and Tulumba Department
San Pedro Viejo is about five kilometers from San Pedro Norte. The San Pedro Viejo site includes a chapel and a post station; the chapel was built around 1650–1690. The site is privately owned, so check in advance whether access is possible. The post station dates from 1767. Among the notable people who passed through were Facundo Quiroga, Manuel “Quebracho” López and Juan Lavalle. This adds further historical points of interest nearby to the architecture in San Pedro Norte.
In Tulumba Department, Estancia Guayascate is located within the Reserva Natural y Cultural del Cerro Colorado. The estancia offers horseback rides during the day and at night, giving guests the chance to experience the stars or the moon. There is also an 11-hole footgolf course and a 350-meter zipline divided into three sections. When planning your trip, you can choose between different types of activities: horseback riding, footgolf and ziplining. The activities may change, so check in advance what is available during your travel dates.
Find the right holiday apartment
When looking for a place to stay, it’s worth deciding first what your trip will focus on: will the town’s history, including the Camino Real, church and cemetery, set the tone, or is the balneario an important part of your plans? For San Pedro Viejo, you’ll need to check separately whether access is possible; for activities at the estancia, confirm current availability.
