An observatory with a history dating back to 1904 and the Río Xanaes help define Pilar. The town is also home to historic churches and the Balneario Municipal.

The Pilar Observatory

The Observatorio Geofísico y Meteorológico de Pilar began operating on July 1, 1904. It is one of Argentina’s oldest observatories and among the most important in Latin America.

The observatory is located on the Río Xanaes. Visitors learning about Pilar can therefore consider two of the town’s prominent landmarks together: the history of geophysical and meteorological research, and the river, which is also important for understanding the town’s geographic setting.

The Río Xanaes and the town’s location

The Río Xanaes marks Pilar’s northern boundary and separates the town from the nearby city of Río Segundo. This relationship is more useful for orientation than a mere similarity in names: Pilar and Río Segundo are separate places, and the river forms Pilar’s northern boundary. Together with the observatory’s location on the Río Xanaes, this gives a tangible picture of the local geography.

Events in other places in the Departamento Río Segundo are regional destinations, not attractions in Pilar.

Churches and historical context

The Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Pilar was built in 1738. It thus provides a significantly older point of reference alongside the observatory’s more recent institutional history. To put them in context, it is worth keeping these two dates distinct: the parish church dates to 1738, while the observatory began operating in 1904.

The Capilla del Pilar is also located near Pilar. It was declared an Argentine National Historic Monument in 1969. The chapel is another historic landmark in the surrounding area, but it is not the same as the parish church in Pilar. Travelers who include both names in their plans can treat the church in town and the nearby monument as separate stops.

Balneario Municipal

The Balneario Municipal in Pilar has restrooms, barbecue grills and kiosks. This sets it apart from the historic attractions and can provide a practical point of reference when planning a stay. Check the Balneario’s current operating conditions before visiting; the facilities listed do not, in themselves, indicate current opening hours or whether it is operating.

The Departamento Río Segundo: regional additions

There are cultural and event-related attractions elsewhere in the Departamento Río Segundo, too. In Villa del Rosario, the Festival Nacional de Folclore en el Agua is a traditional celebration. It had been held without interruption through its 58th edition, which was announced in December 2025. The event belongs to Villa del Rosario and is therefore a regional point of interest, not an attraction in Pilar.

The 52nd edition of the Fiesta Nacional del Salame Casero took place in Oncativo from August 14 to 16, 2026. The three-day celebration brought together food, culture, music and entertainment; admission was free. The edition described also included a food fair with more than 40 exhibitors. Visitors could sample and buy artisanal salami, other cured meats and regional products. These details refer to that edition, not to an ongoing or future program.

This helps you distinguish the local reasons to stay in Pilar from additional regional interests.
