The options in Río Cuarto Department range from museums and parks in Río Cuarto to river swimming spots, beaches and natural pools in the surrounding area. You can first decide whether to focus on collections, regional history or time by the water.

Museums and History

The Museo Histórico Regional organizes its historical tour into five themed rooms. They cover Indigenous peoples in southwestern Córdoba, colonization and the founding of the city of Río Cuarto, the border command and the Desert Campaign, immigration and life in the city and countryside, as well as Héctor Otegui and temporary exhibitions. The themes trace the region’s history from its earliest days to developments in the city and countryside.

The Museo de Bellas Artes houses more than 1,000 works of art, including paintings, sculptures and objects by Antonio Berni, Benito Quinquela Martín and local artists. The collection is displayed in permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Museo del Riel features a permanent, technology-focused exhibition on railway communications: it covers more than 120 years of the country’s communications history and is housed in part of the former railway station.

Cultural buildings also offer insight into the history of the surrounding area. C.C. El Andino is housed in a former railway station built in 1875. Train service there ended in the 1990s; after a period of deterioration, the building was restored and opened as a cultural center on November 13, 1995. The Teatro Municipal was completed in 1908 and inaugurated on the evening of Thursday, September 9, 1909. It is closely connected with the memory of the city of Río Cuarto and the community’s identity-forming heritage.

In Achiras, the Museo del Desierto presents gaucho traditions, the lives of the Comechingones and the town’s mixed identity in three rooms and a cultural space. The restored building of the Fuerte de Achiras opened as the Museo del Desierto in 2000; its rooms were prepared for visitors.

Swimming Spots Nearby

The summer swimming spots in Achiras each have a distinct character. The municipal Balneario has stretches of fine-sand beach, waterfalls and rock pools, as well as barbecue areas and other facilities. It is one of the town’s main attractions in summer. Other swimming spots include La Ollita and the Los Coquitos and Achiras streams. La Ollita is more natural and quieter, while the streams are suitable for family outings.

At the Balneario de Alpa Corral on the Río Las Barrancas, there is a deep bathing area and a shallower beach section. Barbecue areas, sunshades, tables, benches and a snack stand are also available. The balnearios along the waterways are used during the summer months; some have deep swimming areas and small beaches.

The crystal-clear Río Piedras Blancas flows through Las Albahacas. There you’ll find calm water, sandy beaches and a waterfall; the municipal Balneario and Baño de los Dioses are located along the river. The swimming spots and riverbanks are also suitable for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. This riverside town thus combines water-based recreation with activities along the riverbanks.

Parks and Walking Paths

In Río Cuarto, Parque Sarmiento has paths such as Paseo del Parque and Paseo del Lago. The municipal amphitheater hosts artistic, sporting and cultural performances. Other facilities include a large children’s play area, a small railway, boats for children and Plaza de la Amistad.

Parque Ecológico Urbano has a different focus: its offerings include educational trails, encounters with wild and domestic animals, and insights into native flora. The surroundings are described as peaceful and well maintained. The options therefore include park paths and opportunities to encounter nature, as well as riverbanks and swimming spots in the surrounding area—alongside museums and historic sites in Río Cuarto and Achiras.
