Embalse combines the lake, activities along the shore and architectural history, offering a range of travel experiences. To plan your visit, you can choose between beach types and water sports, trails by the lake, and the historic Unidad Turística with the Museo Municipal. Each perspective emphasizes something different: landscape, activity or cultural heritage. This makes it easy to plan your stay around the experiences that matter most to you.

Lake, Dam and Beaches

Lake Embalse is the largest lake in Córdoba Province. The Embalse Dam is 50 meters high and 360 meters long. These measurements give the structure a tangible scale; along the shore, you’ll find distinctly different types of beaches. Playa Las Piedras is a natural, unspoiled beach where rock formations meet the mountain landscape. Playa La Costa, by contrast, is a wide sandy beach for relaxing, sunbathing or playing with children. Choosing between the two means weighing rocks and mountain scenery on the one hand against wide stretches of sand and the activities mentioned on the other.

Architectural History and Museum

The Unidad Turística Embalse was built on the shore of the reservoir between 1946 and 1955. At its historic height, the complex included hotels, shopping arcades, a cinema and theater, a cultural space and 51 bungalows; in total, it offered more than 3,000 places. Together, these elements show the complex as an extensive tourist destination: accommodation alongside commerce and culture. A surviving substation from the original project houses the Museo Municipal. One of the museum’s rooms presents the heritage of the Comechingones.

Water Activities and Summer Offerings

At Balneario Jarana, you’ll find a zip line, kayak and SUP board rentals, and opportunities for sailing. The calm waters of Embalse are also suitable for kayaking, open-water swimming, kitesurfing, surfing, water skiing and boat trips. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between location and activity: the zip line and rentals are at Balneario Jarana; the water sports take place on the waters of Embalse. In summer, Balneario Municipal offers recreational classes and sports tournaments for the whole family. If you’re especially interested in these classes or tournaments, plan your visit for the summer season.

Trails and Land-Based Activities

The shores and trails around Lake Embalse are also suitable for trekking, cycling and horseback riding. Sport fishing is permitted at Embalse on a catch-and-release basis. You can therefore choose how you want to get around: water sports on the lake or activities on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The lakeside trails and sport fishing add more options by the lake to the beach and water activities.

Embalse in the Calamuchita Department

In the wider destination of the Calamuchita Department, La Cumbrecita is a pedestrian village. This gives it a different character from Embalse, where the lake, different types of beaches and water activities shape the options. If you’re choosing between the two destinations, you can compare a pedestrian village with a stay focused on the lake.
