El Maitén combines railway heritage with a broad, glacially formed valley. The workshops and railway museum of the Viejo Expreso Patagónico – La Trochita are among the town’s distinctive features, as are trekking, viewpoints, and a festival in February. This offers several ways to plan your visit: railway heritage, landscapes, or a stay around the Fiesta Nacional del Tren a Vapor.

La Trochita: Workshops, Museum, and Train Excursion

In El Maitén, the workshops and railway museum of the Viejo Expreso Patagónico – La Trochita feature preserved locomotives and carriages. Maintenance work is carried out in the workshops, and replacement parts are custom-made. The railway experience therefore includes both the rolling stock and the work done on it.

The train excursion runs from El Maitén station to the Ingeniero Bruno Thomae stop and back; the journey takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. There is a guide on board, as well as a dining car serving coffee and homemade pastries. The frequency of departures varies by season. Check the current schedule before your trip if you are planning to take the train.

Valley, Trekking, and Viewpoints

El Maitén lies in a broad valley of glacial origin, crossed by the Río Chubut and surrounded by low mountains. Cerro de la Cruz is a trekking destination; from the top, there are panoramic views over El Maitén. The ascent begins at the “Grutita” and is marked by paths and signs associated with the Stations of the Cross. The “Grutita” also features several railway details characteristic of El Maitén.

Cerro La Cruz is 1,377 meters high. From its two viewpoints, you can see the contrast between Andean forest and steppe. Another distinctive sight is the Bella Durmiente rock formation: it resembles a woman at rest and is considered a typical image of El Maitén. The valley, viewpoints, and rock formation offer different perspectives on the landscape, without requiring the same attraction to be the focus of every visit.

Nearby is the entrance to the Cañadón in Aldea Escolar Buenos Aires Chico, 5 km from El Maitén. At the Cañadón, a clear stream flows through a gorge among lengas, coihues, ñires, and cypress trees. Visitors can enjoy water sports on the Río Chubut and fish for rainbow trout and salmon. Along with the viewpoints, there is a choice of river activities and landscapes featuring a stream, gorge, and various tree species.

Fiesta Nacional del Tren a Vapor

Since 1983, the Fiesta Nacional del Tren a Vapor has been held in El Maitén in February. The festival includes a food promenade and live performances. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the exact festival dates in advance. February is therefore a separate planning consideration from the season-dependent train excursion departures; keep the two schedules in mind separately.
