Comodoro Rivadavia comes into focus through two distinctive themes: the history of oil production and the coastal landscape. The Museo Nacional del Petróleo links the city’s history to a specific historic site. At Playa Costanera and in the surrounding area, the promenade, sea, and characteristic landforms take center stage. For planning purposes, you can consider cultural city landmarks, activities by the water, and nature destinations as separate highlights.

Oil History at the Historic Site

The Museo Nacional del Petróleo was built specifically around the historic Pozo N° 2 drilling site. On December 13, 1907, oil was first discovered in Argentina there, by the state. The site thus connects a specific event in the country’s history with the history of the oil industry in Comodoro Rivadavia.

The museum presents this industrial history through images, documents, and machinery. It also features a drilling simulator, unique in the country. History and technical interpretation go hand in hand here: Pozo N° 2 marks the historic reference point, while the exhibits and simulator explore the oil industry.

City Landmarks and Coastal Views

Faro San Jorge is considered a symbol of history and identity in Comodoro Rivadavia; Cerro Chenque is regarded as a symbol of the city’s culture and history. Both names provide distinct reference points for local heritage. Faro San Jorge also offers an impressive view of the Farallón. This geological formation was created by marine erosion—a concrete example of how the coastal landscape took shape.

Playa Costanera offers a long waterfront promenade beside a beach of pebbles and sandy mud. It is suitable for walking, running, and cycling, as well as watching the sunset. This makes the coastal experience different from the cultural themes associated with the museum and city landmarks: here, the focus is on moving along the waterfront and taking in the evening sky.

Nature Destinations Nearby

The Área Natural Protegida Rocas Coloradas is located 20 km north of Comodoro Rivadavia and 10 km north of Barrio Caleta Córdova; it can be reached via Ruta 1. Flat-topped plateaus and terraces meet a dry desert landscape and the vastness of the sea. The area also includes Valle Lunar and Monte de los Meteoritos. These distinctive sites add two specific names and landmarks to the landscape.

At the entrance to the Área Natural Protegida Rocas Coloradas stands the 575-meter-high Pico Salamanca. Its distinctive conical shape defines the landscape; trekking routes to the summit are rated as moderate to difficult. It is located 20 km from Barrio Caleta Córdova on Ruta Provincial 1, and two signposted trails offer panoramic views. Playa Costanera and Pico Salamanca therefore represent different activities: relaxed walks along the waterfront on the one hand, and trekking on trails with designated difficulty levels on the other.

Caleta Córdova and Seafood

The coastal neighborhood of Caleta Córdova is 18 km from downtown Comodoro Rivadavia. Fishing, birdwatching, walking, and diving are available there year-round, appealing to nature and adventure lovers. The range of activities makes it clear that you can tailor your time there to the coast, wildlife watching, or physical activity, depending on your interests.

On weekends, the Feria de Maricultores by the sea offers dishes and flavors made with fresh seafood. If you plan to visit the market, check the current dates before your trip. This ensures your weekend plans are tied to the actual event days.

Visitor Information

The Comodoro Rivadavia Tourist Information Center is located in Paseo Costero. It offers tourists and residents information, guidance, and help discovering and exploring the city’s main attractions. The center was scheduled to be open daily from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Check before visiting whether these hours are still in effect.

The city’s themes can be clearly organized: the museum leads into its oil history, Faro San Jorge and Cerro Chenque represent local history and identity, and the promenade and nearby destinations offer other ways to experience the coast. Your choice therefore depends on whether you would like to focus your stay on city history, waterfront walks, or the landscape around Comodoro Rivadavia.
