Belén brings together religious and urban landmarks in the town center, the Quebrada de Belén, a textile route and a challenging climb. The Monumento Virgen de Belén is a tourist viewpoint. When planning your trip, you can choose from different focuses: history and religious devotion, exploring nature, or the climb, which is rated difficult.

Church, Plaza and Monument

In the center of Belén, the Parroquia Santuario Nuestra Señora de Belén stands opposite Plaza Olmos y Aguilera. The Parroquia was inaugurated in 1907. The Virgen de Belén, patron saint of the department, is venerated here; the church also preserves historic images such as that of Señor de los Milagros. This place therefore combines a specific inauguration date with religious devotion and a collection of historic images. The Plaza is a place shaped by history and social life.

The Monumento Virgen de Belén is 20 meters tall and was inaugurated on December 20, 1982. It is a prominent tourist viewpoint. The two places thus offer different highlights: religious devotion and historic images at the Parroquia, and a tourist viewpoint at the Monumento. The inauguration years, 1907 and 1982, also mark different points in history.

Quebrada and Nature

The Quebrada de Belén is a destination for exploring nature; Ruta Nacional 40 also runs through it. It is the only connection between southern Belén and the Norte Chico and Norte Grande regions. It also connects Belén with Santa María Department and, indirectly via Ruta Provincial 43, with Antofagasta de la Sierra. The Quebrada is therefore both a place to explore nature and a regional transport corridor.

Camping El Dique lies north of Belén and is a peaceful natural setting, suited to relaxing and enjoying nature. Unlike the Quebrada, which also serves as a regional connection, the emphasis here is on a quiet stay in nature. The climb to Mirador del Puma is quite different from this peaceful stay: it takes about two hours, is rated difficult and follows a narrow path throughout. Check the trail conditions again before setting out.

Textile Route and Getting There

Belén is part of the Ruta del Telar, where you can learn about the production process for local textiles. The route focuses on a production process, while the Parroquia and Monumento are shaped by religious, historical and tourist aspects, respectively. Alongside these landmarks, local textile crafts are another cultural highlight to explore.

Belén can be reached from San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, the provincial capital, via Ruta Nacional 60 and Ruta Nacional 40; the distance is 293 km. Ruta Nacional 40 plays a role in two contexts: it runs through the Quebrada and is also one of the roads connecting Belén with the provincial capital. The distance adds a specific figure to the road information.
