A salt flat, surrounding rock formations and a 25-kilometer stretch of white rock offer different perspectives on Antofagasta De La Sierra Department. The cultural history of the Puna is also tangible: rock art, adobe architecture and a revived Inca practice are among the themes that can shape a trip here.

Andean landscape and volcanic rock

Laguna Blanca Biosphere Reserve encompasses an arid Andean landscape with a salt flat and surrounding rock formations. It lies in the Puna and High Andes ecoregions and only partly within Antofagasta de la Sierra Department. The landscape therefore combines the salt flat with a characteristic high-altitude setting, without the entire reserve being part of the department.

Another striking natural area is Campo de Piedra PĂłmez: this 25-kilometer stretch of white rock, formed by volcanic activity, lies at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. Its bright rock landscape is markedly different from the landscape around Laguna Blanca. Those comparing natural destinations will find distinct geological and landscape features here, rather than a single, uniform high-altitude setting.

Traces of Puna history

Mina Incahuasi preserves an important architectural expression of the Hispanic-Indigenous period in the Argentine Puna. It brings together cultural layers from the Inca Empire, the Spanish conquest and modern Argentina. The site is about 80 kilometers north of the present-day town of Antofagasta de la Sierra. This distance helps place Mina Incahuasi as a historical landmark in its own right, distinct from the sights in town.

Campo de las Tobas is also part of the local history of the Antofagasta region: its rock art motifs are at least 1,000 years old. In the town of Antofagasta de la Sierra, meanwhile, the “Casas con historia” tourist walking tour takes visitors through its adobe architecture. The two offer different ways to explore the past: the long history of rock art in one place, and the town’s architecture in the other.

Cultural life also includes the Feria Ganadera y Artesanal de la Puna, a traditional annual celebration featuring cultural, livestock and artistic activities. It attracts visitors from all over Argentina. If you plan to time your visit around the fair, check the specific event dates before setting off. Chaku is also being revived in Laguna Blanca Biosphere Reserve: this ancient Inca practice involves capturing, shearing and releasing vicuñas.

Tours and practical information

Antofagasta Volcano is eight kilometers from town. Its summit crater can be reached on a moderate trek with a local guide. Campo de Piedra Pómez is mainly visited from El Peñón by 4x4 vehicles with a guide, or as part of an organized excursion. The two natural destinations therefore also differ in the activities described: the volcano is known for the trek to its crater, while Campo de Piedra Pómez is reached with a guide or on an organized excursion. Check local conditions before driving to Campo de Piedra Pómez.

Local guides and 4x4 vehicles are required to visit Antofagasta de la Sierra’s natural attractions, which lie at elevations of up to 5,000 meters. This information is just as relevant to planning as the town’s location: Antofagasta de la Sierra is about 550 kilometers north of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca and can be reached via Provincial Route 43.
