San Miguel del Monte offers two clear themes to consider when planning a trip: the landscape around Laguna de Monte and local architectural and cultural history. The church, Rancho de Rosas and archaeological finds provide different historical perspectives. The Monte destination also offers more cultural, nature and cycling activities.
Lagoon, water system and wildlife
Laguna de Monte covers 686 hectares and has a maximum depth of 2.30 meters. It is part of an interconnected group of lagoons and streams known as the Lagunas Encadenadas de Monte. Arroyo Totoral flows into it, and Laguna de las Perdices is its outlet. A complete circuit around Laguna de Monte is approximately 10.6 kilometers long—a specific reference for the length of the route.
In the Monte destination, Garza Blanca, Garza NĂvea and Garza Mora species are found near the vegetation along Laguna de Monte and Arroyo Totoral. Capybaras are also distributed throughout the interconnected lagoons in the Monte area. The smallest population is found in Laguna de Monte, which is attributed to high levels of human activity. The lagoon can therefore be understood both as part of a larger water system and in relation to the distribution of animal populations across the Monte destination.
Church, ranch and archaeological finds
The architectural history of Parroquia San Miguel Arcángel dates back to 1863. The church was built in three different locations before being established at its current site in the center of town. It was consecrated in 1867 and was also declared a National Historic Monument. The church has an eclectic-colonial design. Inside is a main altarpiece depicting the Resurrection of Christ.
Another part of the town’s history is Rancho de Rosas. It was built in 1817 at Estancia Los Cerrillos and is the only residence in the country built using this construction system that has survived to this day. In 1987, it was moved from Estancia Los Cerrillos to the town of Monte, to the corner of Belgrano and Soler. Its original connection to the estancia and its later location in town can thus be distinguished chronologically.
Arches and structural remains were found at the Escuela NÂş 16 archaeological site in San Miguel del Monte. They are believed to be part of the foundations of important buildings and/or passageways from the 17th and 19th centuries, used to conceal weapons or food. This interpretation remains contingent on the proposed identification of the remains.
Culture and outdoor activities in the Monte destination
Cristo de la Esperanza is also part of the cultural heritage of the Monte destination. The sculpture was installed on the southern shore of Laguna de Monte in April 2010. Artist and sculptor Pablo Bagnat carved it from ash wood using a chainsaw; it is 2.10 meters tall. The cross is seven meters high and made of quebracho wood. The dimensions and different materials of the sculpture and the cross describe two distinct elements of this cultural work.
In the Monte destination, the Fiesta de la Comida al Disco is held annually in the Partido de Monte between March 1 and April 30. The festival brings together more than 50 stalls offering various dishes prepared on plow discs. Details may vary by edition. If you’re planning a trip during this period, keep an eye on the specific event dates.
Cycling and water sports are also among the activities mentioned for the Monte destination. Stand-up paddleboarding on Laguna de Monte is offered by Monte Aventura; kayak rentals at the lagoon are available from Onda Activa, Los Cisnes, Camping El Nautico and Monte Aventura. Confirm operating details before making specific plans.
The Monte–Berra Rural Bike route is 20 kilometers long and runs from Parador Fotográfico Monte to Estación Francisco Berra FCPBA. The route is listed as low difficulty, with an estimated duration of two hours. In addition, the Monte destination’s cycling options include circuits designed for all difficulty levels. The bicycle rental services listed there include Onda Activa, Camping El Nautico and MF Bikes; here too, confirm operating details before planning.
