An ecological reserve within the city, an ombĂş tree with a history dating back to 1805, and buildings from different periods shape San Fernando. Travelers looking for a destination that combines nature and urban history will find a variety of themes to explore as they plan their trip.

Nature and Environmental Education at the EcoParque

The EcoParque is an ecological reserve within San Fernando and a green riverside spot where the Delta meets the mainland. Visitors can learn about native species and discover more about nature. At the same time, the area serves to protect the environment and wild flora and fauna. Here, experiencing nature and protecting it go hand in hand: the EcoParque is especially appealing if you want to focus your stay on nature and environmental education.

Historic Sites and Architectural History

Quinta El Ombú is a historic site in San Fernando. The ombú tree after which the estate is named is still standing today. In 1805, Viceroy Rafael de Sobremonte rested in its shade. He visited for the inauguration of the canal and the laying of the church’s cornerstone. The tree’s history thus connects a landmark that still exists today with a specific event in the city’s history.

The Parroquia Aránzazu stands on Constitución, opposite Plaza Mitre. It was declared a provincial and municipal monument in 1988. Its exterior is Neo-Romanesque, while its interior is Neoclassical. The basilica-style floor plan has three naves, a main altar, and six smaller altars dedicated to different saints. The upper windows are rose-shaped and feature stained glass. The church can therefore be described in terms of both its architectural styles and its layout.

The city’s library history also goes back a long way: the Biblioteca y Museo Popular Juan Nepomuceno Madero was founded in 1873 by Juan Nepomuceno Madero, at the suggestion of Amancio Alcorta and with the support of friends and neighbors. It is one of the oldest libraries in the country. The Museo de la Ciudad San Fernando de la Buena Vista is housed in one of the last buildings from the late 19th century to retain its original appearance. The building is Neo-Romanesque, with some eclectic alterations.

Other buildings reflect different periods. The Palacio Belgrano-Otamendi was built between 1860 and 1870 by architect and artist Joaquín Mariano Belgrano. The Palacio Sans Souci was built between 1914 and 1918 and inaugurated with a grand celebration attended by the society of Buenos Aires at the time. These different periods give San Fernando’s architectural history more than a single era to explore.

Tours and Trip Planning

Professional tours of San Fernando’s history are offered in the city. If you’d like to include a tour in your plans, check for upcoming dates. Another special option was the free bus tour on Good Friday to seven historic religious sites in the district. It has been held several times; a report dated April 19, 2025, mentions that one edition had more than 300 registered participants. Check with the municipality to find out whether and when another edition will take place.

If a tour or the Good Friday excursion is important to your trip, check the dates before making plans around it.
