Quilmes combines archaeological remains and museums with riverside leisure spots. The city offers a range of attractions, from a permanently accessible archaeological collection and historic buildings to paths, play and sports areas, and cultural and entertainment activities.
Riverside and Time Outdoors
La Ribera de Quilmes is a place to enjoy the river and is visited year-round. Along Avenida Costanera, recreation and leisure areas and dining options are set amid dense tree cover. Those looking to combine their stay with time by the river will find a different focus here than at the city's cultural sites and collections.
Parque Municipal de la Ribera offers 2,500 meters of accessible paths. It also has children's playgrounds, exercise areas, a skate park, an amphitheater, a pergola, and equipped rest areas. The combination of paths and various facilities makes the park a distinct destination for spending time outdoors; the paths are described as accessible.
Parque de la CervecerĂa also combines green space and leisure. Its current facilities include a ConfiterĂa, a beer garden, and sports courts. The grounds are also home to “Chalecito Bemberg” and diverse tree cover. For a different kind of outdoor outing, family-oriented activities take place on the grounds of Museo HistĂłrico del Transporte Carlos Hillner Decoud: festivals, fairs, games, and sports. On Sundays, the traditional Viaje de los tĂteres is part of the program.
Archaeology, History, and Buildings
Sala ArqueolĂłgica permanently displays part of the archaeological collection of the city of Quilmes, which comprises more than 20,000 objects. The exhibition gives the public access to this recovered cultural heritage. Catedral de Quilmes offers another connection to history: it stands on the site where the Quilmes reduction was established in 1666. Its organ was acquired in Germany and has 1,246 wooden and metal pipes.
Casa de la Cultura is a former city palace and has been declared a Historic Monument of the Province of Buenos Aires. Another unusual cultural destination is Casa de la Botella: the house museum was made from thousands of glass bottles and includes sculptures and various other objects.
Villa Argentina can be understood through its distinctive layout. The garden-city neighborhood comprises 192 picturesque, neo-colonial houses arranged along a diagonal and surrounded by dense tree cover. The first phase of construction opened in 1925 to provide housing for employees of CervecerĂa y MalterĂa Quilmes. The houses and their layout thus connect the neighborhood's character today with a specific chapter in its origins.
Art, Photography, and the Stage
Museo de Artes Visuales “VĂctor Roverano” brings together artists from Quilmes, the region, and invited artists so they can express themselves and share different forms of visual art. The museum's works include pieces by artists from Quilmes and other parts of Argentina. Casa de las Culturas complements this cultural offering with a year-round program: workshops, courses, exhibitions, music series, performances, book presentations, fairs, and cultural gatherings.
Museo Fotográfico Gerónima Giles y Gaete de Mayol opened on July 5, 1986, in a more than 100-year-old house that was donated to the municipal government. The museum exhibits photographs of the city from 1900 and cameras arranged by era. A reconstructed darkroom illustrates developing methods, from manual to digital.
Teatro Municipal features a 600-seat main hall, a microcinema, and an art gallery. These facilities are accessible for wheelchair users and people with disabilities. The theater also houses Espacio INCAA. If you want to make a performance or a movie visit a fixed part of your plans, check the current program in advance.
