Ostende combines wide beaches and vast dunes with memorial sites connected to the town’s founding project. Its history also includes the Viejo Hotel Ostende, whose construction began in 1913. One visitor condition is important when planning your trip: Casa La Elenita can only be viewed from the outside. In Ostende, coastal landscapes, heritage conservation and hotel history offer different perspectives on the town.

Beaches, Dunes and the Town’s Layout

Wide beaches and vast dunes shape Ostende’s landscape. At the same time, a belt of dunes separates the coastal area from the built-up area. The dunes are therefore not only part of the landscape; they also mark a distinction in the town’s layout. Both the coast and the dune landscape, as well as their separation from the built-up area, are part of what defines Ostende.

Memorial Sites and Heritage History

Casa La Elenita dates back to 1935 and is a provincial historical monument. It stands at the intersection of Estocolmo and Playa streets. Visits are possible only from the outside. The visitor condition is clear: the house can be viewed as a monument from the outside, but not from within.

Casa Robette is preserved as a memorial to Ostende’s founding project. A study published in 2022 identifies it as one of the most important cultural and heritage-preservation features of Ostende’s tourist area. The menhirs from the only completed section of Rambla Sur also commemorate the founding project. Casa Robette and the menhirs thus add a distinct dimension alongside the historic Casa La Elenita building: here, the focus is on memorial sites connected to Ostende’s founding.

The History of the Viejo Hotel Ostende

Construction of the Viejo Hotel Ostende began in 1913, and the hotel opened in December of that year. In Pinamar Partido, the former Hotel Termas is now known as the Viejo Hotel Ostende. Historically, the building included large halls, rooms for games, reading and fencing, restaurants, winter gardens, as well as a factory for pasta and pastries. These features describe the hotel’s profile at the time and are part of the building’s history.

A legend tells of the historic journey to the hotel: from Buenos Aires, the trip supposedly went by train from Estación Constitución station to Juancho station. From there, according to the story, travelers continued for several kilometers through a sea of dunes to Colonia Tokio, then took a small train on movable tracks to their destination. This route is recounted as a legend and is not current travel guidance.

Ostende in Pinamar Partido

Ostende is part of the wider destination of Pinamar Partido. Pinamar Partido lies in the southeast of Buenos Aires Province on Argentina’s Atlantic coast. For comparison within Pinamar Partido, Cariló offers a different landscape: forest and sea come together in a protected setting, and activities include ecological tourism and walks among the pines. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up different priorities: Ostende’s beaches, dunes and heritage history versus Cariló’s forest and coastal scenery.
