Sierras Bayas can be explored from two perspectives: its mining history and the trails and viewpoints across the landscape. The town was founded in 1879 as a mining settlement on the slopes of the low mountains of the Tandilia System. Visitors can tour old limestone factories and hike the trails in the surrounding Sierras. The following places and trails offer different starting points for exploring the area.

Mining History and Exhibition

An exhibition at the Museo Estación de Sierras Bayas, described in August 2025, traced the town’s geological, archaeological, social, productive, and cultural history from the formation of the Tandilia System to the present day. Its section on mining identity covered lime kilns, quarries, and factories. Exhibition content may change, so check what is currently on display before visiting. You can also tour old limestone factories. This gives you the opportunity to explore the mining history both in the context of the exhibition and at a specific site.

Viewpoints and Former Quarries

Cerro del Diablo is a viewpoint overlooking the town and the Huecu Fu–Hum area. Visitors can also see lakes in former quarries. This offers two distinct landscape experiences: a named viewpoint and lakes in former mining areas. The municipality installed new information boards at Monte de los Fresnos; a municipal notice dated July 23, 2026, reported the installation. The viewpoint, quarry lakes, and Monte de los Fresnos offer different ways to get to know Sierras Bayas and its surroundings.

Hiking: A Trail and an Organized Circuit

Visitors can hike the trails in the Sierras surrounding Sierras Bayas. One trail described in detail is the Sendero de las VĂas: it is more than 1 kilometer long and features sculptures, old mining carts, and themed walks. A municipal hiking event was offered for Saturday, May 3, 2025, as a 6-kilometer adventure circuit of low to moderate difficulty. This describes a planned event, not a permanent route. The two formats should therefore be clearly distinguished: the Sendero de las VĂas is described as a trail with its own stated length and features, while the circuit was an offering for a specific date. For planning your stay, this provides a concrete distinction between a described trail and a scheduled hiking event.

OlavarrĂa as the Broader Setting

The wider Olavarría destination encompasses landscapes beyond Sierras Bayas. The western part of the Partido de Olavarría is characterized by plains; in the east are low Sierras belonging to the Tandilia System, with elevations of no more than 300 meters. The Partido de Olavarría can be reached via National Route 226 and Provincial Routes 51 and 60. Check current road conditions before your trip. Olavarría’s bus station is served by eleven medium- and long-distance bus lines. As services may change, it is advisable to check current route information before planning your trip.
