Atalaya brings together the history of the Saladeros with museums, a pier and activities on the water. This gives your plans two specific focal points: local history and making use of the water. Depending on what interests you most, you can shape your stay around culture or include activities along the coast and on the Arroyo Buñirigo.

Saladero History and Local History

The Museo Regional Atalaya presents the history of the Saladeros and the first settlements along the Río de la Plata. The Museo de Atalaya is located in the former railway station and displays tools and documents relating to local history. The two museum descriptions have different emphases: one focuses on the Saladeros and early settlements, the other on tools and documents relating to local history.

The main pier also tells of the town’s earlier use. It lies at the mouth of the Arroyo Buñirigo; in the past, the Saladeros’ production was shipped via the pier to the Río de la Plata. The ruins of the Saladeros are also among Atalaya’s historic sights. These places and remnants can thus be linked to the former production of the Saladeros without conflating their different functions.

Another trace of the past is the Sociedad Italiana “Il leone di Caprera”. It was founded in 1884 to support immigrants arriving in the area. A cultural stay can therefore include not only museum collections but also the history of a local institution.

Water Activities in Atalaya

Balneario Municipal – Atalaya is a coastal area for water and nautical sports, as well as fishing. Sport fishing is also possible from the pier and at quiet beaches. Excursions on the water are offered on the Arroyo Buñirigo.

These activities offer different focuses: sport fishing involves fishing from the pier or at quiet beaches, while nautical sports and excursions on the Arroyo focus on moving across the water. When planning your stay, you can decide whether fishing, other water sports or excursions on the Arroyo should be your priority.

Magdalena Partido as a Wider Travel Framework

The wider destination of Magdalena Partido adds nature and culture themes beyond Atalaya. Atalaya lies within the boundaries of the Costero del Sur UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. At El Destino in Partido de Magdalena, you can go hiking and horseback riding; its historic character is reflected in the buildings and garden design. The “Naturaleza Pura” route in the Partido includes opportunities for birdwatching, photographic safaris and walks through gallery forests and landscapes with native fauna.

Cultural offerings elsewhere in Magdalena Partido also add to the picture of Atalaya. In Magdalena, the Museo Histórico Regional Municipal preserves the Partido’s historical and cultural heritage through objects, eyewitness accounts, documents and photographs. Its collection includes furniture and tools from the Saladeros of Atalaya. The “Historia y Cultura” route highlights the Teatro Español, founded in 1889 by the Sociedad Española de Socorros Mutuos; the route also includes the ruins of old Saladeros on the riverbank.

The “Turismo Religioso” route invites you to visit the Parroquia Santa María Magdalena and includes historic rural chapels. It can be experienced in Magdalena, Bavio and Atalaya. In Magdalena, the Circuito del Lago offers another regional perspective: the recreational area covers twelve hectares and includes a five-hectare body of water.

You can use these themes to guide your search according to what you would like to explore during your trip.
