Pueblo San José is known as the second German colony. Its church, townscape and festivals offer visitors various cultural points of interest: the Parroquia San José Obrero combines Romanesque style with detailed furnishings, while its annual festivals showcase religious and German-influenced traditions in different forms. When planning your visit, it is worth considering church art and the events calendar as separate aspects of the destination.

The Church and Cultural Insights

The Parroquia San José Obrero is a Romanesque-style church. Its interior contains 71 stained-glass windows brought from Europe and 14 wooden Stations of the Cross carved with inscriptions in German. The style and furnishings offer different points of reference: Romanesque describes the church as a whole, while the windows and Stations of the Cross identify specific details of its interior.

During a tour in April 2024, Ana Ines Schwindt explained the history of the town. Visitors saw paintings, altars, stained-glass windows, painted angels above the main altar and columns. The Museo del Club Germano Argentino reopened as part of a Kerb program in 2023. These dated milestones add to the picture of the town’s cultural offerings without implying that a tour or museum visit is currently available.

Finding Your Way Around Town

The two towers of the Parroquia San José Obrero are visible from a great distance as you approach San José. Another landmark is Av. Fundador Eduardo Casey, San José’s “wide street,” with central medians. A monument to Sergio Denis stands on one of these central medians. This gives visitors both a prominent church feature to look out for on the approach and a specific street with a named monument to help them find their way around town.

Kerb and Festivals Throughout the Year

The Kerb of San José is a patron-saint festival held on the first weekend in May. Its program includes religious celebrations, a civic parade, Kosser tournaments and presentations by institutions about German traditions and culture. Individual events may vary. In the 2026 Kerb program, the “Raíces que cuentan” project presented two scenes featuring historical photographs, alongside impromptu conversations in the German dialect.

The Fiesta de la Carneada, or Slaughter Festival, is also part of the events calendar and takes place in July. Tastings feature raw ham, Bondiola, white and black blood sausage, Queso de cerdo, cooked Chorizo, beef and pork, as well as Füllsen. The Fülsen Fest traditionally takes place in November and celebrates Volga German cuisine. The two festivals have different culinary focuses: one centers on tastings of various meat products, while the other celebrates Volga German cuisine.

When to Visit and Plan Your Accommodation

The dates are easy to distinguish: the Kerb is held on the first weekend in May, the Fiesta de la Carneada in July, and the Fülsen Fest traditionally in November. Exact annual event dates may vary, and the Kerb program is not the same every year. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these festivals, check the date for the relevant year before making your travel plans. This lets you tie your search for a vacation rental to the occasion you want to attend.
